Would like to bump up my hp a bit more (currently 163rwhp, 202 engine), thinking a unit like a crane or msd might do the job... Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, feedback or experience with these? Can i expect much of a performance gain? Is it worth it?

A good ignition systems definitely worth fitting, especially with today's fuels.

Be sure to use a good compatible coil.

If you use the Crane HI 6 check out the LX92 coil, from memory it is the one that is compatible with a suppressor so you can at least hear some of your radio.

Personally i would use an MSD 6AL with a Blaster 3 coil for street/strip use, although it doesn't give you the easy option for a 2nd rev limiter (or 2 stage) as the HI 6 does.

Fit new leads, cooler plugs & re-curve the distributor.

Ring ICE ignitions in VIC they produce similar units but at a better price, Simon Kryger "innocnt" LH SLR swears by them-he's currently NO1 in Modified Street Blown with a 8.58

Just stay away from the Pro Crap, I mean Pro Comp brand of dizzies.

MSD A6L is good but I would go for the MSD Digital 6 control box. In the end it's a much neater install if rev limiters and other things are added later one. The Digital 6 has most things you need in the one box.
The Crane Hi6 is also very good as well.
I had a Crane Fireball electronic kit put in my std recurved holen dizzy running of an Accel coil in the Hatch before I replaced it with a full MSD ignition system. Pro Billet Dizzy, Digital 6 control box, Blaster coil and Moroso Ultra 40 race wire leads.
The improvement on the strip was only 0.15 on my ET's.
It all depends on how much you want to spend. MSD is king when it come to spark.

Would have to back up hatchman on the pro comp junk :<_<:

When i first got into cars i ended up fitting a pro comp system to my 308 and when i had noting but problems with it having such a weak spark and needing to change plugs each time i took the car out i took it back.

Only to have SSS tell me im talking crap and my tune is out and carb was way to big (though had no problem on the engine dyno without the pro comp system) and to show me on a spark gauge test bench that it could rev to over 10000rpm (under no load in open air) so after almost getting into a fight i walked away with nothing.

Gave Mike at IC&E a call and he got me sorted with a box, rev limiter, coil and leads and have nothing but good things to say about him and his gear.

So after all that i guess you get what you pay for

I'm putting in another vote for Mike at IC&E. I've never used any MSD stuff and have no doubt they are top shelf items that do the job. Nevertheless when I switched from points to electronic I gave Mike a call and he was extremely helpful with all I had to ask. Kit was reasonably priced, very easy to install, hassle free and I even called him up a couple of times with questions which he sorted out for me. He only works with Bosch dizzies tho I think.

You would not regret buying IC&E gear, its the ducks guts!! :spoton:

I bought it through recommendations from guys on this site, and couldn't be happier with it.

I have been using a Crane HI6 TR for about 3 years with great sucess. I like the fact with bad fuels you can take or add 10 degrese of timing from the dash, withouit having to touch the dizzy.

My own vehicle had a MSD dissy and 6AL in it for a long time. I pulled it out and fitted the IC&E setup and was rewarded with better starting and heaps more midrange. I have used IC&E for about 15 years (back when Phil Soderstrom owned it) and have never had a problem, and if something ever did go wrong a module or whatever is only as far away as the nearest Bosch dealer.

I am using a MSD6al BTM (boost timing master) its got a hose running to it that sensores boost pressure. you can then retard the timing or advance it with a twist on the knob its also got two stage limiter. The hi rpm is adjustable from 4600 to 6800rpm. the low rev limiter is adjustable from 1000 two 3000rpm and its also got a msd shift light hooked up to it and line locker so there very versatile

cheers

dam, not too many votes for the crane, I bought a crane hi6trc for my rebuild on a holden 6 wich i plan to use with a commodore blue 3.3 dissy
Sorry about the thread hi jack but would anyone know how I wire it to the dissy, the dissy has two thin black wires from a pick up from memory, is this were I wire it up and if so does polarity matter?

I don't think there's any think wrong with the Crane unit, just that the MSD is marketed better. Check out the Crane site it may help with the wire up.
