UPDATE : I've since done this process & it works , but you have to polish the area well and be very patient ,as you see numbers write em down , I used ultrasonic fluid instead of hydrochloric , I found a document from machinist with engine number on and she match's ,,,,,IT WORKS ,cheers chrisso

I might give this a try. I have a 308 block with a police number on it that I bought off gumtree and can see a few remnants of the 11QT number when I tried the heat method. The only thing that scares me is I might not like what I find when I check the number with the cops.

I think 11qt is for HQ Statesman, the numbers will appear very ,very hazy and the surface needs to be polished free from scratches , so my method was a AA battery with 2 leads taped onto the battery + (positive) to the block and make a swab maybe a spare pushrod & tape a rag to one end ,try an alligator clip on the - (negative)as close to the swab/fluid end and lightly swipe it back n forth across number area ,good eyes and good lighting is needed as numbers are a ghost of what was there previously ,good luck fella

Ill give it a try and report back. The block is in our storage locker so it might be a while. 11QT was from HQ right up until early 1979 so covered a few models.
