im about to replace my front shockers and its got me thinking, you know when you prime them from then on wards you have to keep them upright otherwise you have to start again, well i was thinking if you were to roll a car do you have to reprime the shockers?

I think you might have bigger concerns than resetting your shockers if you roll your car!

Never heard of this before. What exactly do you mean by priming them?
Please Explain...

Priming shocks was for the days before gas pressurised shocks. The purpose was to remove air bubbles from the oil. Fully extend and contract the shocker several times normally did the trick.

[EDIT: ALL shockers are oil filled ChiaLX]

If they are gas pressurised, no. Some Konis and a couple of euro brands need priming, but they are becoming less common.

Thats what I love about this site, learn something new all the time. I always thought gas shockers had gas and not oil! Doh!! :fool:

The best way to tell, Push your shocks in... if the extend by themselves, don't prime them, but as said by Chopper, in the instance of a Koni shock or similar, push it in and it wont come back out by itself. It's good practice to compress and extend them 4 or 5 times, then leave them upright. We usually cycle Koni's for 20seconds or so before testing them on the Dyno at work.

Ah, yes. Forgot to mention the non-gas pressurised units need to be kept upright. Otherwise you risk getting air bubbles back in the oil you just primed. Kind of defeats the purpose otherwise.

and that was my original querry, if you rolled a car on its side and the damage was very minimal, these things do happen. when you rolled it back onto its wheels would you have to reprime the shockers?

The shocks will eventually self prime through NORMAL driving. It's simply better if they are manually primed, especially if they have been in a horizontal position for any lenght of time through ANY set of circumstances. Whether that be the shockers being incorrectly stored, or the vehicle being incorrectly parked.
