Triple Weber’s or SU’s?

Hey fella’s,

Apologies if I am flogging a dead horse, but I am not sure whether I should buy triple Weber’s or SU’s for my lj torana. The car currently has a Holley 350, though I would like to change it to Weber’s or SU’s to gain a bit more hp (plus it looks and sounds sick!! Lol). The car is not on the road yet and hasn’t been registered since last owner in 2007. The engine is a 186 which has had a Holden 202 crank fitted (making it a 202) and is bored 60 thou (which from what I have found online makes it a 208) with flat top pistons, yells terra valves, double valve springs, 179 low Comp head (as indicated by head casting - 7420081), extractors and exhaust. This is pretty much all I know of the engine (was all done by previous owner).

So considering what’s done to the engine, which carb do you guys think will compliment the car the most? Should I look out for anything in particular (ie particular model/size of carby etc). Thank you all in advance and I look forward to some advice/recommendations

Depends how much you like tinkering/tuning

SU's would be easier...1.75"

Datto is right, 1.75" SU's for a mild street car.

If the cam, head and exhaust aren't up to scratch sticking two extra carbs on won't yield huge results.

390 Holley on proper manifold easier still and gives good performance and economy to boot. Just not as much sex appeal.

Thanks for the input fellas. Yes it seems to be the case that the SU’s are easier/simpler to tune and are more economical than the Weber’s. Apparently they also perform almost as good as the Webber’s, with a slight edge going to the Webber’s when the engine has been worked/built correctly. Running 2 inch SU on my 202, much improved over the 1.75 SU on car when I bought it. The only reasons people say SU carbs go out of tune are........................ worn shafts and old gaskets, worn needle jets, mates who insist on lifting the bonnet to "tune the carbies for you". Keep the bonnet shut, rebuild carbs when you get them and you will be a happy camper.

I was lucky enough to link up with a guy here who did that, and they have been good.( 45mm Webers & 48mm Dellortos).

Both cars start pretty easy even after sitting, and perform well.

I know some other guys with sU's who also had this bloke set them up.

Thanks for the advice mate, I am swinging towards the Weber’s

. Tho from what I have read it seem that it can get pretty technical and complicated setting them up properly. Looks like I got some research and experimenting to do 😁

Later down the track (when I mean later I mean in many years to come, I’m only 21 yrs of age so unfortunately I can’t afford blowing all my money on cars as of yet 😆), I plan on having a bit of an hectic setup (700+rwhp). Maybe I may go the Ls route idk yet tbh. But at this kind of power level I want something which is going to be reliable yet streetable, so that’s why I’m leaning towards a modern v8 platform such as an Ls down the track. But these are just plans…
