If you can get the split pin throw the castle nut when tightened its generally a good indication. Probably doesn't look right because the rubber boot it missing.

While on the subject, I can’t torque my nuts up to specification. From memory they may be nyloc rather than castellated. The shaft spins in the hole, even using rattle gun. Can’t loosen them by the same token. It’s only one side.

If the tapered shaft doesn't lock into the seat then one or both parts are either dirty or worn, clean or repair/replace.

As for the OP I agree it looks in the right place, the missing boot makes it seem odd.

Thanks. Could be the steering arm hole I suppose. Was a new tie rod end and the old one was tight.

Run a ream through the steering arm hole and clean it up. Its a 7 degree included angle taper hole.

Thanks axistr. Will enquire at my local tool shop. Probably have to sacrifice the tie rod end to get it off, but they are cheapish, particularly compared to steering failure.

Wedge it into the taper with a bar for leverage and have another go.
