Does anyone know the codes for the different blacks used on the blackout sections for A9X’s and L34’s.

I’m guessing there were different blacks used depending on where the blackout is.

Some examples of the ones I’m after.

- Bonnets and window frames.
- Front light surrounds.
- Grill.
- Back of rear spoiler.
- Rear light frames.

I’ve probably missed tons of specific areas.

I’ve seen the post on the various blackout schemes for the different models.

It’s more the paint codes for these blacks I’m after if possible.

Tia.

The grille and spoiler aren't painted. Just black plastic and fibreglass.

Front light surrounds and rear lights would have been painted in their respective factories, so go with any old black with a flattener for these.

As far as LH goes, I was told by an old GMH factory employee that the matt black changed all of the time because left over paint of all colours would be tipped into the matt black vat. I certainly believe this may be the case with the engine bay paint, but I am unsure about the exterior stuff.

You can see from this picture that the doors were bolted on before the body colour was applied, and then the black was painted last.

Thanks Shiney

Haha, that sounds pretty fast and loose 😆.

I’m now wondering if I should just use the same black as on my Clubsport for all the Matt(ish) parts like headlight surrounds. It has a 250E (skirt black) paint code which is the accent colour. I don’t think it’s full Matt but kind of a low sheen.

For around the window frames and onto the bonnet (A9X style), I recon a nice gloss black would be the go. Most of the photos of reconditioned ones look plenty glossy. I guess door handles would be better gloss black too.

Hi I have a friend with a 77 lx 5000 4 door, it still has its original paint, the door handles are flat to low gloss, around the doors and bonnet it looks to be a medium gloss black, same as the headlight surrounds and rear spoiler,

if need be I can get some photo shots, close ups etc, if it helps u,

Most black-outs on these cars built in the acrylic lacquer days were just Tuxedo Black gloss, but off the gun finish. Chassis & under body was a different black, but virtually all of the exterior black-outs were in Tuxedo.

And not gloss as the Dr stated by ‘off the gun’

The black outs on an a9x were NOT a gloss at all, it's a low gloss (Matt) if you wish to call it that & the door handles, in my opinion it looks a lot better, it's tuxedo mark 2, not the standard tuxedo ! I have a friend with a a9x style hatch painted as per factory & i really think it looks smart. Sure the low gloss finish is a bit harder to keep nice, but to me it's worth it.

GMH never refered to a finish as matte, but everyone wants to quote the word. So to answer your question correctly, it's a low gloss black on the black outs & door handles, similar to the mirror tops ! It has flattening base in it.

No problem mate, there's a lot of confusion in regards to flattening base in paint.

It settles out relatively quickly I know that. Best used soon after the paint shop mixes it or else you need to give it a really good mix. Otherwise you will get gloss. You can’t buff it anyway. Off the gun is as good as it gets. I suppose you could try rubbing to 400 say….

You need to stir all paint really before every use, that's how any of them retain consistencies. In saying that i do put mine on a mixing machine occasionally + regular style mixing.

Absolutely Gary. But the flattening base more so. I tend to store paint upside down to try and bring the heavies to the top ready for hand stirring.

Hi which spoiler is fibreglass, on the lh/lx torana

Sorry. Neither. I was thinking of the flares for a minute there.

Thanks Guys

Some photos would be awesome if you could get some.

This is an unrestored L34 and it shows the difference to the matt black in the engine bay and the Tuxedo on the stripes. The problem with unrestored cars is the fact that most have been polished a few hundred times during their lifespan and any Satin paint often ends up not looking satin anymore.

This is a good example of the A9X paint.

This is what it looks like years later if looked after.

This is the brand new A9X that was over here in WA. It has been polished quite a few times over the years and the bonnet is much glossier than when it left the factory.
