I'm taking my car to the XU1 event at Bathurst this year and they want people to make their cars 'racier' in appearance to suit the event.

I'm not too keen on covering the car with vinyl stickers (other than to door numbers and windscreen vinyls they supply)

I'm going to put stock black steel rims on it but am thinking I might fit a side pipe exhaust as well similar to the race cars of the era.

The car currently has a 2.25 inch system with a straight through muffler.

What's the best way?

Did the race cars run any type of muffler or resonator or was it just pipe?

I'm thinking I'll get the pipe made with a flange so I can easily unbolt the street exhaust and fit the side pipe when I want.

I'd then get them to exit the pipe to the side of the car here

Does anyone else have a side pipe on their LJ or LC?

Hi mate, yes. We have the normal type pipe on one of our LJs, with a fork to a sidepipe. Originally had a removable blanking plate to block off the sidepipe. It slipped in at the fork where the sidepipe came off the fork.
However, you had to jack up the car and get under it to remove the blanking plate, or fit it.
Found it m u c h easier to just fit a rubber plumbers cap with hoseclamp to the end of it. This has worked for years without a single issue.
Cheap and super easy.
I'll see if I can find some pics.

This is the sort of cap.
I bought a spare as well.
Take a spintight with you and it's off or on in 10secs and you dont get dirty.

Did the LC/LJ race cars of the 70's use mufflers at all Col? Or was that only introduced with the V8's? Or with the introduction of Group C perhaps.

Thanks mate.

I'll probably go something a bit more temporary as I'll most likely only use it for the event.

I'm planning on trailering my car to Bathurst so I'll be able to fit the pipe before I leave

Laurie, they were allowed to change the exhaust from the connection to the first muffler downstream of the engine if the Supplementary Regulations for the competition allowed.

No dramas, just FYI, this is temporary, just that we leave it on.
Excuse the oil splatters in the pics, it popped a rocker gasket recently.
Essentially, the exh. pipe comes out of the extractors, into the resonator and then it forks. The exhaust always exits the rear of the car, and the sidepipe is additional.
In your case, the end of the straight part would just be blocked off with the metal plate for road use and
the exhaust goes out the back of the car like normal.
To implement the sidepipe, just remove the bolted blanking plate and bolt on the sidepipe.
When the sidepipe is NOT fitted, there is no external evidence of anything.
FYI, may help.

Nice. May just need to be a bit more rearward of the b-pillar to be fully legal, but it is on the right side, and it is rear of the rear most passenger opening. Not sure whether they want it rear of window openings. Hopefully you’ll never need to find out. Black rims look cool.

claysummers the rear windows open, so it is 400 past them, behind the rear wheel to be legal, which shouldn't matter for the lap around Bathurst.

Yer I wondered about that, rearmost passenger opening isn’t it? Applying the rule to panel vans makes a mockery, but then maybe better having it out the side on a panno because passengers get exhaust fumes a plenty with the upper tailgate up with rear exit in any case.
