I’ve got a 355 stroker block from a HQ and it’s got a Z160 oil filter on it. But this filter I believe is for a VN/VP commodore.

Why is this not the recommended Z30 for red 308? The Z30 is a bigger oil filter with a smaller thread.

Is it a case of whatever the oil filter screws into is off a VP/VN or something?

VN to VS are the same basic engine as a HT-VK 308/5L, regardless of whether the later engine is a 304/5L or a 350/5.7. The oil pumps are essentially interchangeable. I think they made the filter smaller in later cars for clearance. From memory the threaded sensor hole in the oil pump moved a bit but that is about it in terms of bolt up and filter screwing on.

Thanks yel. When I looked at the thread on the z30 it looked smaller in diameter than the z160 which had me thinking the z30 wouldn’t be able to be screwed on.

Probably fitment issue easier to get small filter past swaybar etc...can get big filter into efi commodore just dont fill it full of oil as need to angle it etc just to get it near oil pump & lower hose

Smaller filter = more oil pressure

But less actual filtering

Same thread, same fitment. As above the smaller filter was purely for packaging purposes (e.g. it's required for some bottom radiator hose configurations) so yes, if you can fit the big one then use that.
