G'day all.
Have heard some remedies for removing the glue left behind by taking off body moulds, want to hear what you can suggest.

Once the glue is removed can the paint be polished to bring it back looking like the rest of the panel?

Thanks.

Hi
i am thinking white spirts & a little elbow grease. I think thinners will take the paint off.

I'd avoid thinners on your paint particularly if the car is a few years old, I'd go with some mineral turps or prepsol and then some polish to try and even up the paint work, if basic hand polish (meguires wet look or similar) doesnt do it then I'd step up to some cutting compound on a buff.

I had a vx exec with body moulds, which i didnt like, so i removed them only to find that they use sikaflex.

End result, either machine cutback the sikaflex then repaint panels or by another set of moulds ($110.00), you can guess what i did.

When I worked at Commonwealth Motors here in Canberra we had to use petrol on a toothbrush (company policy) to remove excess glue on the new Valiants that came from the factory. Then polish over where the petrol had been used.

Not sure how good it was for the paint but we removed it immediately and it certainly worked.

Cheers

Wax & Grease Remover. Alot less harsh than thinners. Can also try Eucalyptus Oil, or Big Kev's Goo Remover.

if the glue is eurothane (silkaflex) then thinners/white spirit/wax n grease remover wont affect it, you will have to sand it off.
sorry.

I took mine off with Eucalyptus oil, no probs with the paint however you can tell where they have been as the rest of the paint has faded! I agree those body mould look crap and they are not even the outer extremity of the door so you still get dints.

Did you take them off before you painted yours Peter? Cos your paint is very nice, very clean.

I had originally thought Eucalyptus Oil....but thought it wouldn't be strong enough.

Will give it a bash, white spirits etc mentioned above all sound rather harsh.

Cheers everyone, thanks for your input. :spoton:

The son spray painter loves Sikaflex calls it liquid clips!

But his experience is that if the layer is thick and not just a smear you would have to remove with a Candy wheel and repaint!!!! Sorry.

Alternative is definitley Grease and Wax remover if you are patient!! On his VL he sat down with blade and slowly cut it as close to the body as possible then grease and wax removed the last, sometimes he was lucky other times took the paint off!!
