What does everyone do for a spare, when you have flares with big wheels 17/ 18"

i know you don't have to use same width wheel, but 17" wheel is obviously a few inches taller than a 13, and is going fill up ya boot with big ass wheel

or do some go without a spare? do you have to legally carry a spare?

i hear a some manufacturers now give you a can of that foam shit, instead of a spare.

I tried to find something that would fit under the floor but failed. You can get (expensive) drag front runner wheels but there are no suitable tyres. With a sedan you might be able to take up a little more room and get something like a 7" wide wheel with a tall enough tyre to match the rolling diameter?

Can also be an issue having different fitment front to rear that needs to be covered by a single spare.

I carry tyre plugs and a compressor for minor punctures.

Is it legal to have the standard diameter spare when you run bigger wheels?
What do the guys do who have 17 front and 18 on the rear?

It is illegal to not have a spare on a truck, but I have no idea about passenger vehicles.

Unless it is Engineered for it, it is illegal to have larger (or smaller) diameter tyres outside a set limit. For passenger cars it is 15mm diameter increase (and 26mm diameter decrease). This is compared to all factory optional tyres, but if those factory optional tyres came with larger diameter brakes you need to fit those brakes. So for example if you use the L34 or A9X’s tyre diameter as your largest diameter tyre base you must have the L34 or A9X diameter rotors and drums. If you leave the smaller brakes and fit the 14” rims and tyres you have decreased the car’s braking capacity.

So taking that into account, your original size spare should only be 15mm in diameter smaller than any fitted to the vehicle. Otherwise it is illegal.

Also forgot to add, the aspect ratio between the front and rear tyres is supposed to be 10 or less. So 50 series front and 60 rear is OK, but 30 series front and 50 rear is not allowed.

Mate of mine ran a fleet of trucks in NSW for years and none carried a spare.

He only ran Newcastle to around Sydney area.

He had a few 24 hour tyre services he could use.

He also only ran cleanskins.

Between the extra freight he could carry and what he was being paid for the carcasses he was well in front.

Cheers

Rob

In Victoria there is no requirement to carry a spare wheel to obtain a certificate of Roadworthy, but if you do then it needs to meet appropriate guidelines and/or engineered. Cheers Ron

You wouldn't want to anyway, car would drive terrible and bad for some limited slip diffs. I was talking more about having a skinny (without being an actual space save) in the same diameter. But you still have potential issues with offset and clearance front to rear depending on your setup.

that's what i was thinking, a space saver would be hard to find right offset, just looking at ones i've seen.

It's not a legal requirement to carry a spare wheel/tyre, the last of the Holdens came with a can of fix a flat stuff & a 12v compressor.

Yes, I first learnt his when I was buying my VF ute.

VF's of various specs/models came with anything from/including -

16 x 7  225/60/16

18 x 8  245/45/18

19 x 8.5 + 20 x 9.5 ( 245/40/19 + 275/35/19)

20 x 8.5  + 20 x 9 ( 245/35/20 + 275/30/20)

The spares supplied varied ( as the road wheel size increased ) from 16 x 7 , then a  skinny spacesaver, and then a can of sealant and a little compressor.

Although the upper spec models with the big wheels and tyres obviously got the sealant & compressor.....even the base model with the 16 x 7 steelies had the spare as an "option" and was supplied with only the goo + comp.

The high spec units were probably because the wheels were that big, that storing them would be hard + the wheels were different offset/stage front to back, so you really needed 2 spares anyway.

Thus, as above, in recent years at least, there must be no ADR type requirement to carry a spare?

Monaro did too. My V2 anyway that came with the 18" HSV GTS wheels. I assume the HSV's of that era did but V2 might have been the only Holden that did in that timeframe??

Bit of a compromise on handling I thought Byron? Certainly a hit to the wallet I’m told.

Some of the new trucks I have been looking at have a spare wheel carrier fitted, but no spare wheel.

For passenger cars, a spare is not a roadworthy item, but if you have a spare, it must be roadworthy. If your vehicle had run flat tyres from the factory, you will NOT get a spare. There is also no spare wheel well.

They had stickers on them to stay below 80kmh. Come to think of it my Mrs’ RX350 has one too, a full size spare was optional. What did you mean was a hit to the wallet?

run flats have a stiffer sidewall so the tyre doesn't collapse when there's no air.

manufacturers set up the suspension to compensate for a stiffer tyre.

but that's a bit out of scope for Toranas

My bad Clay. I was talking about a space saver spare. You said run flats, hence the confusion! I misread what you said.

If you were running 120mm 5 stud PCD you could fit one off a Commodore or Monaro. Here is a 155/80/17:

https://www.ebay.com...:Bk9SR6KkrqrVYQ

BA-BF had 17" versions too in Ford stud pattern. And I've seen 16" versions in Mazda and 15" on Kia etc, not sure if any of these had imperial 4.15" or 4.75" stud pattern.

My SSV Redline has 19x8.5 on the front and 19x9 on the rear with 245/40/19's and 275/35/19's.  The factory spare is another front rim and tyre.
