Hi,

My traumatic has a fault where it fails to go into third gear and slips around, unless you back off the throttle and let it shift to third without any load. Stays in third just fine once it's in there, and if you drive her "manual" style the transmission feels like it is working fine.

Figured I'd ask on here before I commit to a rebuilt box if there's any chance of a simple fix ?

Cheers,

Matt

PS - be gentle I'm new here and to automatics in general.

Not related to the problem. But is it a left or right shift Trimatic? If its a left shift like I have normally found in UC you have plenty of other newer donors up to VK to get one out of.

Good callout ... I'll check that out

Sounds like a problem with the vacuum modulator or vacuum line between intake manifold and modulator.

Check modulator to see if any trans oil being sucked through the modulator up the vacuum line (its rooted if there is oil) then check the connection at the intake manifold, they have a tendency to clog up.

Check oil level when car is at operating temp also.

Thanks I’ll look into that … I wondered if since it shifts well under no throttle it might be a vacuum problem

So I dropped the pan on this thing finally to have a bit of look see. It jumped out at me that there is no magnet in the pan. That's gotta be bad right ?

Also there was a lot more of that gritty crap than is visible in shot as it was poured into my oil drum. Does this look like a terminal amount ?

The other thing was I managed to retrieve about 4 litres of fluid from the transmission before I dropped the pan. That seems like a lot to me, but I did park her on ramps for a while before jacking up the back so it was level so maybe a bunch of converter fluid drained to the pan.

This transmission slips like mad shifting from 2nd to 3rd but otherwise works fine. I was intending to clean up, replace filter, adjust bands, then check/fix the modulator and kickdown solenoid but does it look like it might be best to just rebuild it ?

Thanks,

Matt

They do take a fair amount of fluid. Transmission fluid isn't meant to be black - that is burnt and that much gunk, shouldn't be anywhere near that. My guess would be go looking for another transmission, you should be able to fine one OK for general use on Gumtree or similar. Get it checked/serviced before changing out.

The fluid look excellent to me - nice and red like Dexron should look. It's just the tiny bit left that slopped around in the gunk that's black. That stuff was more or less caked onto the pan until I started disturbing it.

With all that sludge in the pan of a slipping trans I would say it is rebuild time. They do not handel a lot of slipping. It kills the clutches real quick

I'm not auto expert but I'd not be happy if my auto pan looked like that!

^^Grab that one if your is left shift. Just be aware of the speedo cable drive gear, it is likely to be the wrong one for a UC so you'll have to frig around to get the driven gear right.

Behind a 202 in a UC. I think it's left shift I'll have a look when I get home. What kind of condition are we talking ?

I don't honestly know the condition. I am asking $150. If you are nearby would be worth grabbing. If not then better find one near you. I am at Willunga SA.

I'm in QLD so a bit expensive to ship, thanks anyway. Local shop can rebuild mine for $1300 which is sounding like a fair deal.
