Hi everyone,

Can someone please run a tape measure across their LJ gtr/xu-1 steering wheel.

l am looking for some alternatives as the Rares ones seem very expensive these days.

l would like to keep things the same diameter as factory.

Cheers Graham.

15.5" diameter is the GMH specification for HQ and LJ GTS, SS, Sandman and GTR steering wheel. LH and HJ say it is 15.5" (394mm) too.

A quick Google search shows that there are some drastically cheaper reproduction wheels available:

Although the fact that the wheel they used in the photo shoot appears to have a lot of flashing around the outer split line isn't a great sign for the quality of finish.

There are a few aftermarket wheels available up to about 380mm, but none of them look anything like a GTS wheel. I've got some nice old Momos that are on the larger side of things, but they're no less expensive than a GTS wheel.

I looked at one of these wheels at a local swap meet earlier in the year. It had been purchased and then offered for sale without use by a third party after his mechanic had offered to sell him a good genuine wheel.

Hadn't seen one before and I initially thought it was genuine as it had the earlier style 5mm thick spokes, unlike the later style Rares ones with 3mm. I ended up not buying it, but went back a couple of times to give it more thought, so quality wasn't horrible.

Can't remember exactly what decided me against it - maybe the fact the horn contacts didn't come with it, and I seem to remember the vinyl around the hub wasn't exactly the same as original.

I'm pretty OCD about parts being 'right', so the fact I went back several times means it was pretty good.
