Lucky NSW, how good is this, should be rolled out nationally.

No more being dudded by a wound back odometer - we’re making checking these readings for free.
And it all starts tomorrow.
Meaning that it'll be easier to spot sellers that have tried to change the milage of their car.
Sellers like a Subaru XV seller who recently took 400,000kms off the car they were selling.
And then sold it for $11,000 more than it had previously been listed for.
It's not ok, and we're making sure it doesn't happen.

The blurb: https://www.nsw.gov....dometer-reading

The check: https://www.service....le-registration

It says it's supposed to work on the smartphone app as well but it doesn't. That gives all the same info EXCEPT for the odometer readings, maybe it's a work in progress?

G'day Liz, I got that same thing when I tried to check on my PC browser (Firefox), but when I used Firefox on my smartphone it went through okay. Buggered if I know why!

And I just checked again using the service.nsw app and it does now show odometer readings, it definitely didn't yesterday (maybe someone is reading this thread)!

I just wish Australia would adopt a similar system to New Zealand... their vehicle history is amazing compared to ours.  And every state in Australia is different.. obvioulsy protecting the businesses that charge us $2 or more to check a PPSR.

And another, although it doesn’t flag the RMS system. I definitely did not do 100,000Ks in one year

So far their system is wrong more often than not. 25% correct. Seems like a big fat Fail to me.

3 fails is better than having to pay for the info.

What are the dodgy car dealers doing with logbooks... just binning them?  how do you hide 100,000kms of history?

You can't really blame the RMS for the typos, Liz, as odometer readings are directly entered online by the authorised examiner at the inspection station (mechanics and computers aren't always a good combination)!

What a load of BS. This has been in the works for several years now. It was mooted pre-Covid.

It was an RMS thing, not a Lib/Labour promise thing. The pollies couldn't care less.

Bigfella327 is correct also. The info is only as reliable is the guy who typed it in. Have you seen how many errors are made by new car dealers when the rego is first established on new cars.

There are few dodgy car dealers, but there are many times that number of back yarders 'flipping' cars for tax-free income, who take huge kms off speedos.

With all of the above, it's probably more important than ever for us to verify that the examiner has the correct odometer reading when we get our pink slips.

Obviously he/she has to scribble it on a piece of paper (or worse still, try to remember it), then transcribe that to the computer, so there are a few points of possible failure there. It's a wonder they haven't come out with a smartphone app that allows them to take a photo of the reading?

I'm sure most examiners wouldn't object to your verifying the reading they enter if you explain this new feature.

The concept that one party is better than the other, that is a joke, right? They’re just brands of arse reamers.

I'm a swinging voter, I've voted Lib, Labor & independent over the years. I notice you're from Brisbane, you guys have no idea how bad our successive (especially Labor) Governments have been in NSW.

At least Gladys got us railways & motorways built that had been seriously neglected by the previous Labor morons. We had a Labor Premier who had no licence & had never driven, he believed that cars were an unnecessary evil. We had this twit in for 10 years, which is why NSW is in such a poor state with its infrastructure. He was so bad he made Krudd & Gillard look good.

Getting back on topic, this RMS scheme with the odometer reading was instigated by my local (State Lib) MP Victor Dominello, the same guy who developed the QR-code which was used Australia wide during Covid.
