Got a old crappy commodore sump here that I am looking at cutting up and making fit my LJ

Its been a long time since having a Engine in my LJ so i'm not sure on clearance issues

Is there any reason why the LJ sump slopes backwards at the rear ? is it to clear a sway bar or is it just the design of the sump  ?

What other clearance problems are there to look out for

Got two ideas ,one is just cutting up the commodore sump and putting the front on the rear , like in second photo ( photoshopped ) .

Or making a larger capacity box up

Good on you Troy,

see the LJ sump with pickup prices are now like,

$400 secondhand and $1000 reconditioned.  :furious:

I think the slope is so the oil pickup is kept in oil more,

by less room for the oil to be away from the pickup?

Also the engine is at an incline and the pickup is at the front part.  :deal:

 especially when accelerating.  :3gears:

Cleaned the sumps up and started cutting

The LJ  sump will be kept for a spare motor

figured the commodore sump is in bad condition and that it doesn't matter if i stuff it up

first cut

Trimmed it some more and placed it about where it needs to be

Noticed the bump that goes down the centre is offset a little and now is offset the wrong way which is a bit disappointing

Wouldn’t it be easier to modify a HQ-WB/LH-UC sump? Must have been about 3/4 million of these made or more if Bedford had them too. Lots more than Commodore. Very few people are going to ever want one so will be near free too! I still see very cheap HQ-WB 6cyl stuff on Gumtree.

yep it would be easier but i wont learn much by taking the easy way

this way i can practice my panel beating and crappy welding skills on something that would otherwise end up at the tip

Good luck sealing up pinholes in the welding. Brazing seems to be the effective method.

Nice project mate.

You are probably all over it, but I do notice with those big ASR type boxy sumps, there is very little vertical gap between the sump bottom, and the top of the K frame.( LJ ).  May pay to be sure that any of your "bits" will clear  in this area?  Just FYI.

It really should not be difficult to avoid pin-holes when welding a simple steel thing like this together.

You don't braze LPG cylinders, or custom fuel tanks & water tanks for camper vans and fourbies, you just weld them with plain old steel filler. Clean the shit first and try and make nice continuous welds with half decent torch manipulation, of course. And look at what you're doing.

Yes but the material you are referring to Heath is a bit different to the thin second hand 50 year old tin in question. I’m not the best welder on the planet but I’m speaking from experience, and I’ve seen posts on this forum of people modifying things like factory rocker covers, and giving up due to leaks.
