I recently bought a torana and just noticed the chassis number doesn’t match the plate number on the drivers side.

Is this going to be a problem when comes time to register it?

It could. Which number is on the sales receipt and/or rego papers? If it's the chassis number just pull the plate off, after of course checking the chassis number on the compliance plate, that it isn't off a stolen car etc.

The number in the sales receipt is the same as the number on the incorrect compliance plate. I’ve contacted the previous owner and we’re going to amend the sales receipt to reflect the chassis number that’s on the car.

I’ve spoken to the department of transport in Canberra and it looks like they will ignore the compliance plates and go off the chassis number on the car.

The incorrect plates are from a different torana with a different engine (6 cylinder) and a different colour. The PPSR on this vehicle comes back clear.

The PPSR on the actual chassis number shows the correct colour and engine number and is also clear of finance owing or theft.

Yeah, just that it’s all in the clear - and you’ve avoided the rego dept wanting to get unnecessarily fussy about
differing tags or numbers or blahblahblah silly legal red tape overcomplicated rubbish
Teriffic news that’s the car (and you) are both in the clear and have legal clearance to go ahead
I’d be stoked
Congrats and Happy days

This was only over a phone call to department of transport, it’s not in the clear yet. It’s going in for a vehicle ID check next week and I believe the outcome of that will determine if/how it can be registered.

The fact that both cars are cleared on PPSR is a good start and that the chassis number in the car is crystal clear and not tampered with is also a good start.

Another good thing is the PPSR for the actual chassis number has the car in the correct colour and has the correct engine number.

Is this just a pov pack torana or a model of significance?

Hmm... If I were you, I think I'd be removing the compliance plate and telling them it was lost in a rebuild, just to save any confusion.

Even if the DoT inspector knows what they're talking about and disregards the number on the compliance plate, you could still be in for some questioning on the side of the road when some nosy copper notices the discrepancy?

Plus, it may not have been you, but, somebody at some time has either illegally affixed a compliance plate to the wrong car, or they've illegally changed the chassis number without getting a police number issued?

The compliance plate is no good to you anyway so, for my money, you're better off without it!

Remove the plate I reckon. It doesn't belong on the car anyway.

A week and a half later and I’ve heard no news at all about the vehicle ID.

This is not a fun experience.

Have you taken the car in for an inspection or has it just been phone calls so far?

It’s been in for a basic id. They called a couple of days ago and looking likely it’ll need to go back in for a complex id.
