Hi All

Just putting it out there for members views on Water Pumps for 6-cylinder Red Motors

First off, I have a 173 and found out that 202 and 173 have a different WP than all the other 6 cyls.

They have a larger flange at 55mm distance between center of bolt hole to center of bolt hole. All other sizes engine apparently have a 45mm distance.

When I restored my LC Torana 3 years ago, I fitted a GMB WP. The car hasn't travelled many miles since and now developed a noise in the engine area.

I just replaced the WP with a GATES water pump and the noise has gone.

You would think that you would get many years out of a water pump. Maybe I got a bad one or didn't use it enough.

Anyway, just wondering the members views are on the best water pump. GMB, GATES, PROTEX.

Cheers

John

Hi John, I don't think its certain engines having different water pumps, more so what year the car was made.

The best water pump is one with a cast iron impeller - forget the pressed steel ones.

As Dave posted above there are three types. This relates to the flange and bolt spacing and shaft length. On 1969 they changed the flange bolt hole spacing. Then the shaft got longer. There also seems to be a later on which has a monster shaft bush. Impellers can be cast as original, or pressed.

Read this. I've copied & pasted it from a sticky in the Engine section of this forum.

Thanks All.

The link has great info.

That's why this Forum is so valuable.

Unfortunately, I already fitted the Pressed steel one without knowing the alternative. Fingers crossed the Gates water pump will last a bit longer.

I font know a part number and anyway may not guarantee impeller type. Anyway here is zn ebay Iik though I don't generally like buying off ebay.https://www.ebay.com...emis&media=COPY
Ideally you have a reliable parts counter, order the part and inspect impeller before purchase.

Correct, the part number will NOT guarantee the impeller type. This is generally a manufacturer decision. if they can get the one impeller to suit four different part numbers, then they will run with that.

The water pump pictured above will not work with the LJ XU-1 fan, the shaft is to short to centre the fan. It will work with the LJ GTR fan though.
For the LJ XU-1 fan the shaft needs to protrude past the mounting flange further. To the best of my knowledge it's not available with a cast impeller, but a cast impeller can be bought separately.
I'll get the correct part number later.
The long shaft version can still be used with the GTR fan.

The long shaft pump for a LJ XU-1 is part number W814.

GMH used the 4.1/2" shaft water pump on all LJ 6cyl.

I ordered a wp814rp this afternoon at repco. Doesn't have a cast impeller, but I'm getting 1 separately. Next question, would it be more advantages to smoothen the sand casting, or leave it,in regards to flow.

They seem to have the best bearings, shafts & seals on the aftermarket scene. Got a good deal on it.
