Makes no difference to its operation

Just make sure if its a later one with corresponding pedal the angled end bit points down.

It needs to be in a closed system to make vacuum or it will run continuously and not make any vacuum.

Do not connect to any other piping.

it is a vacuum assist pump and it needs to be connected to engine vacuum by a one way valve

thats what it is made for

you can maybe try running two of them pumps , going to try it on one of my cars but still its a weak pump

Are you talking about the UP28 Hella pump as fitted to the VE VVT V6?

This and similar pumps are in every wreckers yard and can be had very cheaply. They are designed to work in a closed system and will pull 20 inches of vacuum with ease. Some come with a useable vacuum control switch like the Volvo one I used in my yellow LJ.

Are you certain it was a closed system in the volvo ?

All the cars i have seen the UP28 in its been a assist pump

It is not about how much vacuum the pump can pull in total but more the length of time it takes

Hella States it as "Typical for support applications" and also has less than half the service life compared to a UP50

You may get away with one if your car has a small booster but the test i did with a LH V8 booster it took longer to reach its vacuum

I was looking through a Hella  brochure and stumbled across it. I know nothing else, just thought I'd mention it.
