Novice mechanic here but keen to learn.

Looking to replace my current distributor on a HQ 308 strokes to 355.

Any recommendations?

I have a new electronic multi point distributor but was advised not go multi point and just stick with a regular electronic distributor.

I’m happy to pay whatever, I just want a decent one.

Hi   depends on the cam/ engine build. I like an adjustable advance so I would pick an MSD unit with a CD ignition. I went for the street fire myself but if the motor is big horsepower with a big cam and high compression I would go with a bigger ignition system. try https://www.holley.com/brands/msd/ for a start.

I had to go back to a small cap factory disy on my UC as the MSD will not clear the firewall. Harder to remap to sute the engine but I still use an MSD street fire cd box and only use the disy to trigger the box not the coil. Lots bigger spark that way

As said depends what your engine specs, what you’re using it for.
ICE is the best to use, better adjustment.
MSD works well but does require a lot of fiddling with dizzy to get the advance curve right, they are normally very wrong for a holden out of the box.

Thanks all. I don’t know anything about the engine specs but it’s got a lumpy cam and I’ve been told it’s a 355.

Compression doesn’t seem to be that high.

All round I think it’s a pretty mild engine that just sounds tough due to the cam.

I think ease of adjustment of the advance curve would good.

Whats wrong with the distributor you have? If it works I would use it.

Scorcher ignition in Melbourne are excellent. It would be enormously useful to know whats in your engine for the distributor supplier to set it up properly for you.

The current distributor is a stock points one that someone has converted to electronic. Was advised by a mechanic to replace it.

It also seems to have excessive advance in it.

How do I find out engine specs without pulling it down? Can this be somewhat established on a dyno?

The advance curve can be altered. I converted a 202 dissy to electronic back it he 80,s with a Bosch kit. Still has the Bosch " chopper wheel" rotor and sensor, but it now has a home made TAI. Still works fine after nearly 40 years.

Maybe I’ll just take the car with the current distributor to a dyno tuner and get them do what they need to do to get it running properly.

If it needs a new dizzy they can probably pick the right one for the setup.
