Hi all, I have the old style spring ring type leads on my car with a AC Delco battery,the problem I’m finding is the rings won’t grip the battery posts properly,they tend to rise up ,makes it worse with a bit of grease on as they are tapered.Any advise appreciated thanks .

How about tap a sneaky grub screw in the side, assuming you want to stay original.

Don’t know how a thread would go in that metal I think it could be too soft.

Doesn’t need a lot of torque, just stop it from riding up. Got a better idea other than scrapping for a decent set?

Squish them up a tad with multi-grips and don't put grease on them

Hi exactly as rodomo has stated squish them with multi grips, or u can remove leads and put in a vice, at worst again remove leads put on something solid and tap them with a hammer, I also have used a screw back in the day

Use a center punch and hammer to burr the inside of the clamps in several places.

There is a ring of spring steel inside the clamps. I doubt the grub screw idea will work, as it will most likely damage the spring.
Are these the US manufactured ones, or the local ones? The local ones have an Australian Patent Number cast into the top.

If they don't grab the post properly, it could be the post itself, being worn, or not being a 1:9 SAE 537 taper. There are a few batteries around which are not an SAE 537 taper.

 

It could also be that the battery lead itself has the internal contact pads missing, due to being removed from the battery post by twisting, or being hit with the tapered reamer so beloved of auto electricians.

There were also some reproduction made some years ago that were made without the contact pads, and they just plain don't work. 

 

That's what the patent number on the terminal is all about, by the way. The function and presence of the pads inside the terminal.

I too have spring ring type terminals (repro) on my car, but have not had issue with them coming loose or gripping, i cannot confirm if my terminals have the internal pads.
Mine were made by ReprosRus.

Purchased off EBay Jaso,October 2020 ,so I suspect the early repo type as Geoff mentioned.
