not sure if they're dodgy or not. they reckon they've been doing it for 35 yrs... but my auto guy seemed to think otherwise...
By the way, the company is BM Higginbottom, Sydney. Anyone heard anything about these guys?
Cheers.

Ive heard OF higinbottom before and basically theyre a mass production type engine reconditioning shop. Not to say this is a bad thing BUT. Their tollerances are NOT as close as a blueprinted engine from a performance shop.
Having said that... a $2500 engine that will last you god knows how long.. compared to a $8000 engine that will last you god knows how long but with more "fruit"... you do the math!!
Honestly.. For the price i'd go for it.. and i'd also ask them whether you could upgrade your camshaft to something slightly lumpier ( but still gas suited if your going 100% LPG which i would reccomend), and also ask them to write on the reciept what oversize the bore will be.
A common practice for mass production shops it to just bore ALL blocks to .060 over which effectively means that block cannot be rebuilt again.
I think your on a winner for what you want to do! Ask them if you can just hot it up that little bit and i think you'll be a happy camper!
Cheers!

Tiny, do you mean just the cam? Is there anything else I should consider doing?
Yeah for $2200 and a 3 yr warranty you can't really go wrong hey?
Pretty much all th other shops in the phone book wanted about $3000. Is it worth spending the extra $800?
By the way, my auto guy quoted me $200 to beef up the trimatic to suit the 5 litre. Is that decent?
Cheers.

we used to reco engines with the old valves and springs and even the pistons for the standard joe blo. (names withheld to protect the guilty).
not meaning to say they arn't good jobs but just check you know exactly what your money is buying.
$200 is o.k. for the trimatic esp. if the thing shifts like a shift kit job and not just the pressure wound up.
again ask what you getting for your money.

$200 sounds awefully cheap for an auto fixup... just so you know a mate of mine had my trimatic worked over... Stage 2 shift kit ( upped pressures) machined for extra clutches where needed, and a full rebuild with new components like the clutches and bands( not race spec gear, original replacement type gear) and it cost me $700 and that was MATES RATES a Looong time ago!
Sometimes the extra $800 is worth it.. sometimes it may really not be! its hard to say...
I'd definitely ask them exactly what they do.. what size over bore, what new components and what re-used components and what theyre going to do.
In hotting it up.. Theres not a whole lot you can do to the inside of the engine without spending lots of money.. so yeah camshaft i'd do and thats about it! (really the only other thing is head porting.. but that gets serious cost wise!!)

What you said about the auto tiny... that guy has already done a full rebuild on it, and that was $500. So yeah, with the extra $200 i'll spend, the box will owe me $700. He said he was doing the oil pump, porting something, throwing in an extra clutch plate or two and i think he said something about the valve body. Is that good or do you need more specifics?
As for the engine and what they'd do at higginbottom... i can't really remember the fine details. I'll give them another buzz and find out EXACTLY what they would do, (if that would be any good to the wiser toranarians out there helping me)
Cheers.

Yep! the more info you can get the better!
Just remeber what your getting, and that's a $3000 rebuild engine.. It's something that will definitely last another 100,000Kms, but wont be a highly tuned performance race engine or anything! But thats ok! You've only paid 3 grand for it What i'm saying is be realistic with your expectations, and while its being done just neaten up the rough edges! (cam work..)
Cheers!

tiny, does a rebuilt engine only last 100,000? the 253 has done 400,000+ and its still going strong! (bar the rattle).
cheers.
