Hi

  Just thought I would post  What  fun a replacement starter can be. It is listed as fitting 253 amd 308. It bolted up well to my engine and clears the headers, Shame the pinion is wrong. The ring gear is bent at the place where it is not suppouted (Where the converter bolts to the torque plate) and there is a tooth missing so the trans had to come out. Not fun on a uc with a T400. Cant even lower the trans to the ground with the header pipes in place. To remove the headders I would need to unbolt them and then remove the engine!  Lets hope the trans jack holds untill I get a new torque plate.

I'll see you your UC V8 starter removal and raise you a LC V8 starter removal. Guess what I spent the last 2 weekends doing?

Ripped the Bosch starter motor out last week and dropped it off at the local auto elec with intention of getting it rebuilt. It was critical to get it dimensional the same for it to go back in. He recommended this unit:

Heaps smaller compared to the original Bosch unit and for $245, well worth a try. Apparantly they are new gen high torque units. We'll see I guess.

I put in this weekend and seems to work a treat.

The only issue I had was I worped the flywheel/converter shroud pan trying to get it out. When I shoehorned it back in, it rubbed against the flywheel. Several remove and replaces, lots of swearing and some washers between the shround and the tranny flange and the racket stopped.

Looks the same as the one I took off, It was also labelled Bosh style 9 tooth.

 

As long as the pinion is correct for your engine all should be good. If not you may need a new ring gear. 

 

I suspect my starter was incorrectly labelled or the wrong pinion fitted. Had it for 6 months or so before fitting it so I guess no hope of a refund. OEX and JAS are both made in china and sold by most parts distributors. I am thinking of taking mine into the SA wholesaler (Where I have an account) and see what they say. May at least find out if it is as labelled or a manufacturing mistake.

I guess the difference with mine was that the auto elec sourced the like for like version making sure the angles were all the same.

I'm running a cheap China fake-Bosch in mine and it has been okay. I had to modify it a bit for my application but that was no fault of the manufacturer.

I bought my replacement starter through Dr Terry business....cant remember brand but it replaced the genuine 1999 vs s3 hi-torque starter that I've had in several cars from v8 lc gtr to vp v8 ute untill solenoid stud cracked & broke lol.

 

All my cars have v8 conversions have the hi-torque starters with the 2 short bolts...think I've used that JAS brand on vy sv8 no issues.

Bosch factory starters (late model Holden V8 eg. VR etc.) are unfortunately discontinued. That's why I'm running a China replacement.

I've sold quite a few JAS SNB010s over the last few years, with no problems at all, so I think there is more to this story.

   I suspect the problem is with the one i have not all of them.   Most work well but I think I have fallen victom to a faulty unit out of the box. I had a factory starter on the car for 5 years, It started to get a bit slow so I upgraded. I now have 3 even spaced sections of dammaged teeth on the ring gear and one missing. where the one is missing is where the dammage lined up with the unsupported section of the ring gear (Where the presseng for the torque converter bolt is) This section bent the unsupported ring gear.    My guess is this starter escaped the factory with an incorect pinion on it.   Flexplate is now replaced, Trans back in ready for the last of the exhaust and then an Aeroflow starter fitted and engagement checked before fitting the cover and sway bar.

We sell a lot of JAS too, have had a couple fail but mostly they are ok.

Unfortunately most people want the cheapest repairs possible on their pos kia or whatever, resulting in parts suppliers stocking up on chinesium products...

The whole "made in China is evil" thing cracks me up. Words probably typed on a chinese-made keyboard or phone, wearing made in china clothes, etc. It's not Made in China you need to be wary of - and if stuff wasn't, it would be a lot more expensive - it's how it's made, like anything. Plenty of well-made stuff from China, plenty of rubbish stuff, too. You just need to be buyer aware like anything and occasionally it goes wrong.

I'm 180deg away. To me it's made anywhere BUT China wherever possible. Which is not an easy task today.

I am happy to pay more to not fund them!
