These are the front shocks that I pulled out of my L34 back in the mid 90's. They had a coat of matt black which I am guessing was applied not long before I bought it. Under that was a coat of satin black similar to the engine bay paint in LH's. Does anyone have a picture of the F71 shocks that were fitted at the rear? Mine had been replaced at some stage. (Howard?) The date is 7E4

Also, who is the go to for rebuilding them?

I’getting the Prenier’s shocks redone, even have some green mixed up for the rears. Will get the business name for you.

Thanks Byron. I have NOS green ones and NOS blue ones that I bought so I could get the paint colours mixed up, but neither are from big Torana.

I think the shocks I have are 1975 or 1976 for SLR5000 fronts, will check when I get home. They are in blue and white GMH boxes.

 

When you look at the formula it is pretty close to Woodsman Green in tinters and quantities. I reckon you'd go close to using Woodsman Green and no-one would notice. By chance I have one of the original front guards in my shed off my remaining HK Monaro which was Woodsman Green. When I put the 1974 shocks next to the 1968 paint it is pretty hard to pick the difference, sprayed side by side using fresh paint it'd probably look like an original Elizabeth build metallic Holden where the front panels always looked different to the firewall back as they were painted in separate locations at different times. But on shocks under a car, you'd not notice it.

 

What was interesting with the shocks I have for my Premier. They are not the same as a run of the mill HJ Holden being a 5.0L auto, air and steer car. They came from a dude resto-modding a tired but very original HJ Premier of the same spec but from late in 1975 whereas mine is late 1974. When the shocks arrived, not only do all four have the broadcast sheet code stickers, they are all made in and around September 1974. So it's clear that GMH must have obtained shocks in batches on an economy of scale basis, given those on this spec Premier would be low volume they must have had a minimum quantity, and they were still using them over 12 months later.



Do they re chrome the shafts Col?

 

Teh, place I spoke to Laurie use new Monroe internals. Cut the end off the old shocks and put all the new internals in with the valving as per the original spec on the old outer tube.

Not sure Laurie, we were just getting them valve checked/re valved.   Give them a yell, they seem good to deal with.

I suppose they would have come from the Monroe Wylie factory adjacent Chryslers Tonsley Park Body and assembly plant, though Monroe didn’t purchase W H Wylie until 1985.

Mine have all been replaced Laurie. I have a pair of std fronts for a six and they're a browny colour.

After looking into this a bit, it seems that Monroe used every colour under the sun.

I have been lucky enough to have been put onto a fella who still has the original F71 rears in his L34. He is going to give one a bit of a polish for me to get the colour.

Those HJ 5.0L auto Premier rear shocks are identical in format in how and where the numbers are located to that L34 RB shock. They are 4K4 dated whereas that L34 (VD69/77 F71) shock is 2D4 (or 7D4). I reckon that RB shock is the same green as the Premier shock. Which is the colour that is all but Woodsman Green. As I said I got a pot colour matched off a NOS shock of the same colour and the mix is essentially Woodsman Green with a few other minor tinters thrown in. You'll know once it is cleaned up.

Turns out it is definitely blue.  The same blue as the VR Commodore one above.

Interesting those old docs. advising of stuff.
I always wonder just who it was in dealerships that actually read them, and digested the info, then remembered it all.
May have been doable in a large dealership, but small country franchises...to busy to do it?

The folders that I have don't have any greasy fingerprints on them anywhere. I'd reckon the workshop supervisor put the sheets in the folders, and that was that.

Doing some post Phillip Island maintenance under the car and it turns out the fronts in mine are almost 50 years old. GM 9929873 7E4.
