I think I may have mentioned this years ago, but the thermostat in my car is an American made Dole, which I assumed was an aftermarket part, but on cleaning it up yesterday I noticed a manufacture date of January 1974. It is of a totally different design to any of the later ones I have seen.  Anybody else ever come across one?

Dole were a large aftermarket supplier to the automotive industry. They made/branded a lot of water valves, thermostats, fuel tank caps etc. Like Harrison, PBR, Tridon etc. So it may even have come in a genuine GM box or as an aftermarket part. What is the part number for an SLR5000/L34 thermostat? Examples below:

Buick 1199784 Thermostat 170 Degree - Dole Valve DV-15 - 1961-1963 Buick Special | eBay

NEW Dole Heater Water Temperature Control Valve For 63-68 Corvette And More DW-6 | eBay

70-74 Chevrolet Corvette Chrome Non-Vented Locking Gas Cap NOS Dole GM 107 | eBay

Vintage Dole DV-1H High Temperature 180F Thermostat | eBay

NOS Lot of thermostats | eBay

3149691 delco thermostat | eBay

Interesting little bit of info here too: Dole Thermostats - Oldsmobile - Technical - Antique Automobile Club of America - Discussion Forums (aaca.org)

The images in the second post Laurie I think are Robertshaw type.

Looks like GM used them as an OE supplier.

Part number is same for 6 cyl. In my book it has been amended to the same number as the 1982 one pictured above.

Page 6-67 of the workshop manual.

The manual stipulates in a few places to ensure the thermostat is fitted with the word FRONT towards the front. Looking at yours and this image you can see why.

Well there you go.  I might even grab that NOS ebay one Byron posted and fit it back in the old girl.

Mine has worked perfectly for nearly 50 years. Maybe I should just put that one back in. :-)

My NOS one turned up today. They weren't made in the USA.  They were made here. This one is 1-73 so maybe I should put it up on Ebay as XU1 gold.

There you go, another way of keeping the local content % up on GMH vehicles. Where was it shipped from?

It was part of a cleanout of an old garage in Glenreagh in NSW.
