Posting for a friend - can anyone shed any light on this engine number?
308 Turbo pattern, obviously been decked and restamped.
There is an 'L' stamped near the date code also.
Any info appreciated.

The 115th Chassis or Engine number issued in 1987 by South Australian Police.

Is it a 1976 or 1986 block? 1986 will have 308 on both sides and it will have been a 304 originally, 1976 will be 308 on one side only. You'll also pick it by the length of the valley head bolt bosses.

Thanks fellas. We thought probably police issue.
Byron, it's a 76 block, 308 one side only.

People turn their nose up at Police issue number stamped blocks. They aren't a bad thing to have for what should be an obvious reason.

Is that piston 80 thou oversize?  That would be stretching the limit in a Holden V8.  Or has it been sleeved?

Gem used to sell them 80 over Laurie. I've seen plenty. I used to regularly buy HJ-HZ 5.0L Statesman, Premier etc as daily drivers back in the 90's. Whenever they had a Gem engine they often got hot. Not sure if it was the large pistons or if a misguided person used the wrong or no thermostat, or the radiators needed cleaning. I just used them until rego ran out and wrecked them. Never had problems with original engine cars though other than the cams were normally buggered, and just about every time they'd need a starter and a water pump. Back then exchange starters were $60 and water pumps were almost free.

Remember when 6 cylinder water pumps were $5ea at the farm supplies. Still only about $25.

Laurie I just double checked with the blocks owner. It's only 30 thou over at the moment, just looks like an 80 in the pic.

Hopefully it cleans up for a 30 thou re-ring as I think 7002P are forged TRW 325-360hp 11:1 327 pistons. Hence probably why the block has been decked. I’m not sure you’ll be able to rebuild that with 308 pistons as they might pop out the block, will always need 327 pistons. Will have pretty high static compression with carbied heads. Just doing maths in my head might be 12:1-ish. Probably better suited to VN-VS or alloy heads?

Thanks Byron that's good info I'll pass on. Not real sure what his plans are, it's actually a friend of my brother who owns it. It's also got 2 cylinders too many for my liking!
