Wondering if magnesium wheels are safe to use on the road .
Yes, I know they dont hold the air real well, but what if running tubes?

Magnesium is very brittle and of course if they catch on fire there is no putting it out. Not really recommended for street use. Why what wheels are you considering?

I'm looking for Rebels,
Posted Image
have a company tracking down a set (14x7) to be restored to concourse, supplied with new nuts and caps..... but could take months to find them.
Have been offered same but in Magnesium (were race rims) in 14x7, 14x8.

I think I'll wait for the resto ones.

From what I hear and I am no expert, these magnesium wheels have a life period. The metal becomes brittal as time goes on, so any significant driving forces may lead to a failure when under load. Bad news in my books.

OK if you use them for static display.

Are early XU-1 Sprintmasters high in magnesium content, does anybody know?

Mondie...no..none.
10 years max for real magnesium wheels...they go brittle in the air. explode after hitting the smallest object...good for display...wait for the resto alloy ones.To tell if they are real magnesium...scratch them in the well...if it is silver they are alloy...if it is black they are magnesium. Just a little tip.

Knoath, there are a set of 14 x7 Ford ones leaning on a fence near me for sale..$100...been there for months..

Thanks Rory, by 'the well' what exactly do you mean?

Ahhh....Ford ones? And what would I use them for?
Ta for the offer, but I'l have to politely decline.

Cheers for the advice though.

Not trying to steal your thread here Dick, would it be safe to say that my 15x10 hotwires could be magnesium? they have on the inside "for race use only".

The well is the inside dip on the rim/inside the tyre.
15 x 10 Hotwires with racing only are not magnesium..that was stamped on the first cast lot done for the L34/A9X brigade.

if i remember last weeks engineering class....magnesium is bad
has a high rate of ion loss meaning it corodes in humid conditions...ie leaving them in a big car trailer in the sun over a few weeks will cause a while blob where the rim used to be
i may be wrong...been a huge week but i wouldnt trust them

Thanks for clearing that up for me rorym, If they where made for race use only and for L34/A9X torana's then they must have been used at one time for racing yes???

All "magnesium" wheels are magnesium alloy, pure magnesium is too soft to be used in a wheel. Technically any alloy with any % of magnesium is a mag wheel.
Not sure what % of Mg one needs to get the desirable shiny mag wheel.
Rory, dont really understand your test for a "magnesium wheel", scratching beneath the surface should reveal shiny metal, but black?

hey knoath,

i just drilled out some hotwires that were ford stud pattern and made some spacer rings so that they centre on the hub..now they are torana pattern...rory's wheels might come in handy if you can't find any...just a thought
