Bathurst trophy to honour Brock
Champion race driver Peter Brock will be remembered at this year's Bathurst 1000 race with a trophy awarded in his name.

The Peter Brock Trophy will become the permanent prize for the race that he won a record nine times.

V8 Supercars Chairman Tony Cochrane says the trophy will have the words 'King Of The Mountain' inscribed on it.

"We think this is a completely appropriate way to keep the legend of Peter Brock alive for many, many, many years to come for both the drivers and his fans at Mount Panorama," he said.

Before next month's race there will be a lap of honour around Mount Panorama featuring some of Brock's winning cars and co-drivers.

Brock will be farewelled at a state funeral at Melbourne's St Paul's cathedral next Tuesday.

Brock's family will hold a private cremation ceremony after the funeral, and another public tribute will be staged at the Sandown racecourse the following Friday.

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks unveiled the details of the state funeral today and said his government also wanted to create a lasting monument to the 'King of the Mountain', who was also a dedicated road safety campaigner.

"The fact that we're heading for one of the lowest road tolls on record this year is a testament really to some of the work that he did in carrying the road safety message ... across Victoria," he said.

"[He left a legacy] which he left as a champion of road safety, as someone who was King of the Mountain, at the top of motor sport in Australia, whose record will probably never be beaten at the Bathurst event in any year."

Brock died last Friday when his car hit a tree during the Targa West rally just outside Perth.

In other developments:
The authorities who control the Bathurst 1000 V8 race and its venue Mount Panorama have ruled out suggestions that either one should be renamed in honour of nine-time Bathurst champion Peter Brock. (Full Story)

Bathurst name change ruled out
The authorities who control the Bathurst 1000 V8 race and its venue Mount Panorama have ruled out suggestions that either one should be renamed in honour of nine-time Bathurst champion Peter Brock.

Brock, who died in a rally crash last week, was dubbed the 'King of the Mountain' for his dominance of the Bathurst event and Bathurst Regional Council has opened up its website for public suggestions on how to honour him.

But Bathurst Mayor Norm Mann said renaming Mount Panorama as Mount Brock was not on the cards.

He said the tribute could take the form of a church service at the Mount Panorama pits in conjunction with any planned state funeral in Victoria, or a pilgrimage walk of the mount.

And Bathurst 1000 organisers say renaming the race the Brock 1000 would be inappropriate and not what Brock would have wanted.

"There have been hundreds of ideas floated in the media and in the public," V8 Supercars Australia chairman Tony Cochrane said in a statement.

"The reality is, however, until V8 Supercars Australia decides, in full consultation with the family, what the tribute will be these ideas are pure speculation."

Australian Vee Eight Supercar Company Pty Ltd (AVESCO) is expected to announce details of a Brock tribute this week.

The tribute is expected to be held on the Sunday of next month's race weekend.

Memorial trophy and champions lap to honour Peter Brock

12/09/2006: A perpetual Peter Brock Trophy will be awarded to the winners of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and a flowing tribute to the legend of Australian motor sport featuring many of his winning cars along with his co-drivers will be held before this years iconic Australian race begins.

V8 Supercars Australia will dedicate the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 to Peter Brock with the permanent trophy that all drivers will aspire to win and walk in the footsteps of the great man. It will be etched with the words Peter Brock Trophy and underscored with King of the Mountain.

A designer is being commissioned to create the trophy for this years event after which the inaugural winners names will be inscribed.

The front row of the starting grid in 2006 will also be left vacant as a dedication to his achievements at Mount Panorama. Brock still holds the record for the most pole positions with six starts from number one on the grid.

All V8 Supercars competing at the event will also be supplied with 05 decals, the number that Peter Brock raced in that was retired by the sport in 1997, to apply to their cars.

This is a great honour for our family and we deeply appreciate it, said Lewis Brock, brother of the great racer.

The Peter Brock trophy will be the culmination of a day that will celebrate the life of Peter Brock. Race day will begin with an extensive tribute at the place, Mount Panorama, where the Peter Brock legend was fashioned.

We want to do what we feel is most appropriate and with the full support of Peters family, V8 Supercars Australia Chairman Tony Cochrane said.

One of the things that we are very conscious of is that Peter would not have wanted any changes made to the format of the Great Race as first and foremost he was a fierce competitor.

By naming the trophy we forever honour his name. I dare say that no-one will ever match his record at Mount Panorama so there is no more fitting tribute than for the winners of the race to be afforded the honour.

V8 Supercars Australia is attempting to source as many of the cars that Peter Brock won with on the mountain for a Champions Lap of Honour.

It is hoped the cars will be driven by Peter Brocks son James, former co-drivers Brian Sampson, Jim Richards, Larry Perkins, John Harvey, David Parsons and Peter McLeod, based on their availability.

Present day drivers Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes, childhood prodigies of their hero and mentor, will also be invited to drive in the parade depending on the availability of cars and former co-drivers.

The Champions Lap of Honour will be driven at low speed to give fans time to reflect and say a final farewell.

This will be followed by a special homily to be delivered by V8 Supercars Australia Chaplain Gary Coleman followed by a minutes silence as a mark of respect.

Iva Davies, an Australia icon in his own right, will then perform his version of Heroes to a montage of footage featuring the life and times of Peter Brock.

This will be followed by the national anthem, the formation of the grid and the start of the 2006 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 at 10.00am.

An outline of the Peter Brock Tribute on Sunday October 8 is as follows:

9.00am: A Gathering on the Grid of family and close friends

9.02am: Champions Lap of Honour commences

9.22am: Chaplains Address

9.24am: One minutes silence

9.25am: Heroes performed by Iva Davies

9.30am: V8 Supercars form in pit lane

9.35am: Australian national anthem

9.40am: Pit exit opens

9.45am: Cars assemble on the grid

10.00am: The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000

The nine cars that Peter Brock drove to Bathurst wins were:

1972: Holden Torana LJ XU1 (500km race)

1975: Holden Torana L34 with Brian Sampson

1978: Holden Torana A9X with Jim Richards

1979: Holden Torana A9X with Jim Richards

1980: Holden Commodore VC with Jim Richards

1982: Holden Commodore VH with Larry Perkins

1983: Holden Commodore VH with Larry Perkins and John Harvey

1984: Holden Commodore VK with Larry Perkins

1987: Holden Commodore VL with David Parsons and Peter McLeod

Thanks for that Tinks,

I have a feeling I will be needing the kleenex  at the race this year, especially the vacant front row of the grid that is a great way to honour and remember our Hero.

RIP Brocky

I have pruned the Ebay references out of the thread as there is enough "Brock Ebay" threads without adding to this which has nothing to do with Ebay.

Thanks.

What about the combined Torana Clubs of Australia doing a run to Bathurst? If we get enough starters we might convince the powers to be to have a lap of honour for the car that started the Legend, maybe on the Saturday?

Anyone interested?
