Does anybody know when holden changed from stamping "202" on the
side of the block to "3.3".
I have just bought a JL engine that has "3.3" on the side of the block and
up to now have only ever seen "202".
Any info would be appreciated.

JL with 3.3?? sounds strange to me. that was the prefix for red engines. Sounds like the engine number might have been restamped. But who would be stupid enough to do it on a 3.3 block? 3.3s are blue and black engines.
Sounds like a hillbilly job to me

Hi Guys.
AFAIK the 202 casting changed to 3.3 in mid '79 (late HZ/VB/UC)
Dr Terry.

Which was well after they finished making LJs and JL blocks.

79 from Dr Terry wouldnt be too far wrong, have seen VB's with metric nos and all my 78 UC's have imperial.

Is the engine number stamped evenly and straight? Sounds odd......

My mates HZ had a Red 3.3 block. I first saw that back in 1981, so it's nothing new.

Hi All,
The owner come clean. They contacted the previous owner who informed them that the mechanic who rebuilt the motor restamped it. I have not parted with any cash so is lucky.
Thanks for all the advice and feedback!
