Hey Guys,
I have a slight problem i have a red 202 with a 350 holley and a trimatic. i can get it to run fine when at idle but as soon as i put it into drive or reverse. it dies unless i rev it to about 4000 rpm then drop it into gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys

Sounds like low vacuum problem on the info you have given. Does it have a big cam? How is the ignition timing? Has the harmonic balancer slipped giving a wrong timing reading?

it is as stock as they come. not even extractors. umm so how do i check if it is the vacum. apparently the engine had a rebuild about 15000k ago but i am not sure about that. there are exhaust leaks straight out of the engne.

If the exhaust is leaking from the side of the head, chances are so is the inlet manifold. That would give low vacuum and would be where I would look first.
Good luck!

How did you go? Will more than likely need the carb. re-adjusting?

decided to pull it all apart (engine that is) and rebuild for myself (Just to make sure) prolly put a smaller head maybe a 173 or something and see how we go from there also replacing the auto with a manual. so probably will be a while cuz i am doing it all myself. and only on weekends cuz i work 12hr+ days. ill get back when i am done.

173 head is not the way to go for performance as the chamber doesn't flow as well from all acounts. Someone else may want to comment here?

i just found and bought a 202 yellow terra head and a 4 spd box for it so ill see how it goes. i was thinking of the smaller head for compression?

You can get enough compression from a 202 head by machining and if your pulling it down anyway get the block decked. This means machining the top off the block to make extra compression. 173 could be too much and again because of the combustion chamber design, a step backwards. For me on a budget, black/blue head is the way to go for cheap performance. Bolt on, 12 port head, XU1 size valves, double valve springs standard.
