Hi, I'm a bit new to this but I hope I can solve a problem I'm having with my LX. I brought the car over one and a half years ago and have slowly been putting it back together. It's been a one man team effort on a very low budget. Anyway, the car started off it's live as a four cylinder but someone prior to me buying the car dropped in a 161. When reading through manuals etc, it was plain to see that this was a back yard effort and a poor one at that. It seems that they had no real idea of what they where doing and put in parts that didn't fit. An example is there was a throttle cable bracket bronze weilded to the rocker cover so it would link up to the carbi. anyway, I think the car has the wrong drive shaft. The first thing that makes think this is the unsual mounting bracket to the frame of the car. The second is the fan is very close to the radiator. Another is that the auto transmission doesn't line up with the gear select. My theroy is this. A four cylinder engine is shorter than an in line six, therefore a tailshaft in a four is longer than a tailshaft in a six cylinder. If you bolt on a six cylinder engine (with a trimatic gearbox) to a four cylinders driveshaft, it will "push" the engine closer to the front of the car. At present I don't have another torana to compare distances between key points. My question is, is there a set messurement between, say the fan and the radiator on a standard 6 cylinder LX torana? Maybe between the firewall and the back of the block? Are the tailshafts of differnt lengths and what does the engine mount the goes from the frame to the engine mount look like? I've replaced the engine mount (between the block and the mount) and the frame mount just doesn't look right. I hope someone can both understand what I'm trying to say, and has an answer or some photos they could email me to help either put my mind at rest, or confirm my concerns.

Welcome to the forums. The problem is due to the fact that the 4 cylinder has a different front end to the 6 and 8. The mounting brackets that are part of the k frame are different. To do the job properly you would need to replace the front end or have the proper mounts grafted on from another car. The front end can be replaced withy the motor still in the car. Also the tail shaft is a two piece in the 4 cylinder opel. It is mounted midway to the floor pan. However, the UC Torana with the starfire 4cyclinder has a one piece tail shaft and the correct front end. The 6 and 8 cylinder tailshafts are the same length but different thickness. If you were going to get another front end you should go for a UC front end or RTS (6 or 8 cylinder) LX front end. Hope this sheds some light.

My manual sunbird had a 1 piece purple tailshaft, no 2 piece. Maybe the auto's were different?

Yes you need to change front X member to drop a 6/V8 in it.

I think he's talking about the UC Sunbirds!! Mine had the Starfire and the two piece tail shaft (all UC Sunbirds regardless of motor had the 2piece by the way)!!
