Hi,
engine related question, is actually my work ute,
Got this ute as part of job I started,
so the servicing has not been up to me till now.
started it the other morning, and was making a hell of a ticking noise,
check the oil black as the ace of spades, and thinner than water.
I changed the oil, ticking is reduced, but not gone completely.
Get that when an engine has not had an oil change in 28,500kms
The bit that worried me was,
there is air pressure coming out of the oil filler when the engine is running,
not just a bit, a lot, can't really hold your hand over the filler hole.
This engine is a 4 cylinder in a Courier Ute 2001 model, has 128,000kms on it.

Any insite into what could be wrong with this engine would be very appreciated.
Cheers
Chris.

sounds like the lifters or something could be diryt or damaged from no oil (what it had in it would not be concitered oil) and the pressure i would assume is normal back pressure from the pistons rushing down into the sump.
might come good with a few more frequent oil changes, some cheep stuff for now and then switching to the good oil with regular changes.

I'm pretty sure they had the oil pump in the front of the engine under the timing case. It's common for them to have noisy lifters.
There was a modification when they were new under warranty, But there was never a recall done on them.

Sounds like the engine breather is blocked. Should be a breather to the intake manifold from the engine. It may be clogged with Carbon. If you find the union between the hose and manifold (usually 12mm spanner size) You can remove it and work the carbon out of it with some carby cleaner and a small hand held drill bit. This is not a PCV valve, but just a restriction in the line to reduce suction.
Clean it out so you can blow through it. Re-assemble and then check the crancase pressure at the oil filler.

Maybe Dr Terry may be able to shed some light on this also.
Good luck.
John.

worse case could be some holed pistons.

If you are getting a heap of air at idle it will be massive under load.

Was the old oil contaminated with fuel?

If it was there is a fair chance the rings have worn..this will cause your blowby issues....another reason may be stuck rings..from carbon build up. A high detergent oil will clean it and the ticking lifters.

A compression test will show up the problem.
