Hey Y'all,

I'm new to this forum, and to Holden V8s, I have recently bought a UC Torana (well it has sunbird badges) with a 253 ( ) in it and I am woundering if anyone has any links to a how to tune page, or if anyone wants to type up a quick do it this way sort of guide. i have searched through this forum and a few others but cannot seam to find any easy to read and understand guide as to timing and carby tuning and that sort of thing,

So anyone want to help me out?

I have all the tools i need (i think) so i just need a bit of guidence.

Thanks so much

Tony

hi Tony, a place to start might be your local library. Most of them have workshop manuals for lots of different models. Find the one for a old v8 holden and your more than half way there.

also try ebay or second hand book shops.
any book from late 60's modles thru to early 80's will guide you on the motor, of course the rest of the car will reside in the specific torana manuals avliable.

aside that set the timing to around 6 deg and wip the cap off and check the mechanical and vaccum advance are working.
from there set the idle on the carby and the mixture screws to around the highest idle.
if both were way out you may have to reset the idle.
further to this you may have to compression test to confirm a sound motor to start with or you may never get it tuned right.
there is about fifty other little things i could cover but really the book is a good source to start with.

EDIT; leads, plugs, filters etc etc.

Best to start with a compression test and check TDC.

I will check out the library tonight, or maybe just head down to Repco and grab a "gregorys" manual,

Anyone had any experince with the gregorys stuff for the holdens? are they any good?

Thanks

i prefer gregorys layout and hard cover, also the paper they print on.
there is no V8 book for your model so grab one that suits the year model of your motor for tuning insight.

Where are you located? Also add to above list, if still running points, check points opening/condition.

They are old cars, fairly easy to keep in good tune.

Also with 253's check what carburettor it's running. Most mod them with carbies that are too large.

Again thanks for the replies!

I will grab a gregories tonight.

Yella SLuR, I'm guessing the carb depends alot on what has been done to the motor, it has been "Worked" but i don't know to what degree.

Any rought guides to work out what carby it should be running,
other than the try a different one and see if it get better or worse?
