If you're going to modify the heads use VN-VS heads-VT's arent as good, watch out for core shift in the VT blocks-really common problem a mate with a VT SS rebuilt his engine for a blower only to find a block with bad core shift, bought another from holden same problem

And for the road, VT blocks (holden type) are NOT 5.7ltr from factory, they are 5.0litre (as is any 304cu motor).

Cheers
Keith

The Holden 304 was phased out when then Holden introduced the VT Series II.

I'll have to disagree with you Keith. A mate of mine who owned a VT Series I (Holden 304) pulled his engine out to have it rebuild. He wanted to stroke it to a 355ci and we were suprised to find that the block had been casted with the bore clearance for the 5.7 litre crank.

If you think about it, it makes sense. Why not cast blocks with the bores relieved for 5.7 litre cranks which can be used for both the 5.0 litre and 5.7 engines.

Also, I bought a 5.0 litre spares block from Holden about 5-6 years ago now and it too was cast with the clearance for the 5.7 litre crank.

the last 304 blocks were actually in vs series 3 utes and statos. my vs series 3 ute is a 6/2000 model. the motor is the same as a vt roller engine.

i think vt series ones finished in 97 some time.

I thought the VT Series I was introduced in 1997?

VT Series II was introduced in mid 1999 from memory but I could be wrong!

VT Series II came out September 1999, so the VT Series one with the 304 was available up to September 1999, or later depending on the last run-out sale, but technically September 1999.

All Holden blocks cast after the release of the VR GTS (5.7litre 215kW) are clearanced to accept the stroker crank.

The last vehicles to use the holden block were the Series III utes, and Series I VT's.
