Hi,
I recently had to replace the water pump on the 253 in the LX,
whilst doing that I replaced the timing cover as well,
(looked a bit too coroded for my liking)
was looking at the slack in the timing chain, is a double row,
and thinking that cant be good.
Q. 1
Is there supposed to be some kind of tensioner on that chain?
Q. 2
How often should this chain be replaced?
The engine has approx 100,000 kms since rebuilt by Dalby Engine Rebuilders.
Q. 3
Have you replaced the chain with gears?
So what are the pros and cons of a geared setup VS chain setup.
Any advice would be muchly appreciated.
Cheers
Chris.

Only real early blocks up to about 73 had a tensioner and it didn't work very well so it was discontinued.
Those double row chains seem to last forever so unless your running a big cam, I'd be inclined to leave it, on the other hand , if you enjoy working on your engine , a new chain will get the cam timing back to where The General intended it to be and you may find an extra horsepower or two.
As for a gear drive - great for pose value ! Bloody annoying after a while if its driven regularly.

forget about the Chain tensioner, they are useless.
the tensioner is on the wrong side of the chain (tension side) when for it to work properly it should be on the slack side, they create more trouble than they fix

Hi mick,As for a gear drive - great for pose value ! Bloody annoying after a while if its driven regularly.
what did you mean by this?
Will probably not be a daily driver, but will be regularly driven,
it is not going to be a Shannons Enthuasist Car, rofl.
Does anyone know what the advantages of the gear system,
Better cam timing?
Less cam play?
Disadvantage.
Noisy?
Types available?
I have heard of straight cut gears,
apparently sound like a supercharger, would be annoying.
Other types?
Cheers
Chris.

yes, yes, yes and more wear, yes, yes and no other types avleable that i know of.
in other words you pretty much got if.
unless you are building a very specific motor or you love the wank factor of the noise all you need is a good quallity double row timing chain set.

Thanks,
that is another off the list of things,
am doing the research before pulling the motor apart,
If I wanted the LX to sound like it has a supercharger,
I'd get a blower.
lol
Cheers
