not charging

basically, everything was fine this morning then i lost power, slowley but surely. down to zero volt, so i was thinking its the alternator, had it tested but a auto sparkey, it was fine but the regulator was replaced as a saftey measure, thought this would solve the problem, but no, still not charging, it was working fine 2 days ago, and the only thing i touched since, was the dash, to fix a few connections.....so im still looking into the dash, but i was wondering if someone with an EFI 304 had experienced this problem....could it really have something to do with the dash?
any help is greatly appreciated.
cheers
john

The alternator has a load sensing wire,it needs to be connected or it wont charge.I think it's the white wire from memory. But this is from the alt to the battery though.

If the brown wire is connected and your warning light is not glowing when you turn the ign to on, test for possible probs with the globe or dash connections by:
Disconnecting the brown wire and measuring the voltage at the end of it with ign at on, it should be 11-12V, (earthing this lead or using a test lamp may end up blowing the globe)
If it measures okay, then the prob is at the alternator end, measure the resistance between the terminal where the brown wire connects(with the wire disconnected) and the -ve of the battery it should be in the hundred of Ohms, if very high or infinite resistance........prob is here.

The brake and temp(if no gauge is fitted) warning lights should light when the ign is turned to start.

Or is it a picture of a battery?
My post mentioned "light", not "lights".

Rodomo, you obviously dont think your point post carried any ambiguity, perhaps not.........was just clarifying what could be confusing for someone else along the line, people who are just interested in problems do read these threads.
Yes there is, the manual refers to it as a generator light......but they use a battery for the picture. Is there an "Alt" light on a standard UC dash?
Anyway, why not describe it as a battery light, rather than an ignition light( the lights dont go on simply because the ign is switched to on, its because the alternator isnt putting out the req voltage and the oil pump is not creating the req pressure.)......(or simply as the charging light, did the LX have a lamp with a zappy arrow thing?)......in a standard dash the oil light would also display the same trait as the battery light(glowing when ign is switched to on).......so dont you think your post would have carried some chance for confusion if just a "light" was seen? You may well scream, that there is a little picture of an oil can and a battery in those lights..........but which one would be the ignition light? I can tell you a non mechanical person will only be telling you there were "lights glowing" ,

Got it in one devil, John had been PMing me last night and pretty sure we had worked out the root and cause of his problem. The dash is a custom job with an unmarked alternator light tacked on the left hand side. I had not explaned to him what this and other lights were when he picked it up so its more my fault than anyones!I dont think this will be relevant to Chamois as he appeared to have comprehended what the problem may have been before you posted....... we dont know if Chamois has a sports dash either, the low charge light just being a globe positioned inside the voltmeter, however, for the benefit of others that read the thread:
