Hi guys and gals.

Bought myself a spare complete banjo diff setup. It has, what I am told, a factory vibration damper. Just wanted to know if this is for real and if anyone has ever come across one.. Check out the photobucket link for a picture.

I have heard about them before but never seen one..

Thanks..

In all honesty, I can't imagine how it works and I am a mechanic!!! It only bolts on by two of the housing bolts. No other attachment to the diff at all. It is almost like it is a harmonic damper or something similar.

Never seen one of those before,I can't see how it would work or make a difference.

It's meant to damp torque vibration. Your tailshaft meets the diff at an angle and despite the uni, the front of the diff is forced slightly up and down causing virtually undetectable low frequency vibration. You can see by the flat mount & arm that this is the direction it effects. It was suggested to possibly provide some degree of car sickness relief.

It6 doesnt make the diff any stronger, its still just a puny banjo.

It's a factory part, but only on 4 cylinder Toranas as far as I know - maybe only on the 3.9:1 diff ratio??? It's been a while since I've seen one, but the one in the pic looks larger than the few I've seen. The LX parts manual has them listed, with a drawing of them.

Just out of interest, the diff came out of a LX SS hatch 4.2. The ratio is 3.08. Impossible to say whether or not it was fitted as standard or taken from off another car. The fellow who owned it previously advised me it was fitted as standard..Who knows??

Straight out of the parts manual - "Rear axle damper - Sunbird hatchback. Damper, pn 92001730,
spacer pn 92001731
bolt pn 120647,
washer pn 10321.

Looks like it was used in 4 cylinder hatchbacks only. The diagram in the manual looks a lot like the pic you've posted, so it's most probably an oem one.

Thanks Dangerous, sounds good to me.. I should have checked my manual first :D I certainly will be having a look when I get home.. It all seems right becuase of all the SL/R's and SS's I have had something to do with, not one of them have ever had it fitted..

Cheers
