Hello

I am just after a few opinions on what else should be done before the motor goes in the car, i am planning to
-polish the aly bits on the steering and finish powder coating it.
-fit blue anodized elec water pump
-pull manifold back off and polish
-possibly pull the heads back off and polish as well
-get a new air cleaner, not sure what sort though
-MSD billet alternator

possibly fuel injection later but not in the short distant future

the car is probably going to be auzora blue (new mazda colour) or black with the slr stripes. not sure if they should be dark grey or black

Front end

front end 2

thanks for hosting the pics neil.

I might put some more pics up as i go. The car is currently a bare shell and has been blasted and primed.

Looking good Phil. Your car is going to sit really low with that front setup! :spoton:

Are those Koni's with Lovells springs?

yes koni adjustables and Lovell raised height springs. had to do that cos i have the CRS 2" drop stubs.
might have to put the 10mm spacer back on top of the springs.

the car colour is either going to be black or more probably Auzora Blue (its the new mazda 3 clouur) It will have the SLR stripes in either black or dark grey.

should the engine bay be black or blue?

As the others have said, VERY NICE! Engine looks tough as nails. Are they custom extractors? What size are they?

Nice work with the 2 engine stands too, that's great!!

To answer your original question - prior to putting the engine in, I'd just finish off any polishing and detailing you wish to do. You could always HPC/JetHot coat the intake as an alternative to polishing, it'll make maintenance a lot easier.

Which-ever colour you end up painting the car, I would do the bay to match. If car goes blue, leave the donk black. If car goes black, maybe do the donk blue (only if there will be other parts coloured blue to create a theme). If not, just leave it black, and hit it off with the polished and chrome parts.

What are you doing with your bumper bars - body-colour or chrome?? I vote chrome considering the colours you are talking of using.

Keep the pics coming! Well done.

I love the rotissire too - smart idea!

I borrowed an engine stand from a mate but he didnt need it back (in Jail) so i just welded the bracket on that for the front.
then made one up sort of the same for the back. Now i have my own engine stand.

only problem is that is slightly too low so i cant totally turn the car over but it suits my needs.

My current thinking is car will be black.
Bumpers 'were' going to be painted silver like the flat chrome sort of look
but after seeing the pics of HSVGTS's hatch I am thinking chrome.
only problem is that i have shortened them to bring them closer to the car so have a lot of welding to get absolutely spot on before chroming.

best thing was that there was bugger all rust anywhere after it was blasted - RARE!

I have more pics but not sure how to post properly yet. when i get that sorted i will put more up.
All chassis seam welding is complete.

gotta get around to applying for permit for relocated coilovers

Looks mad. Would look mad with the engine bay black.

Though you shouldn't have seem welded it...as that leaves it open to stress fractures that can go alone the whole weld. Either spot weld or use this glue (don't know what is called)...but its a something that I've been told by some drifters in Japan.

Cutting out the spring and shock mounts isn't going to give you much more room. You really need to widen the tub at the rear, near where the dint in the rail is. To do it properly you need to move the rail section inboard. The tyre will hit this area well before touching the shock, let alone the spring.

Struggler, once the shock is fitted that is the closest part to the tyre. If the shock is moving i will also remove its mountings. the spring mounting will not cause any problems either but if the spring is moving i dont want its mounting left. this leaves the whole tub looking clean once everything is modified - I want it to look as though it came like that from the factory.

Jbird - I am a mechanical supervisor and only on rare circumstances have I ever seen a weld crack. that area has already been folded for strength and spot welded as you say. this area hardly flexes otherswise it would break spot welds from the factory. If you read about the GMP&A A9X that was for auction holden used to fully seam weld all the racing chassis'

looks good! i see some of pics must of come in handy

Moot - Yes mate they certainly did your a legend

When I had my shell welded is was advised that the standard practise is to stitch weld the seams, approximately one inch welds one inch apart. I was told this was done to prevent a crack in the weld from travelling the length of the chassis.
