Have heard a few different stories about this. Is it necessary to cut a section from the lip along the firewall, to allow sufficient clearance for a V8 distributor? Which dizzy's will fit, which dizzy's will not fit? Just started sorting out the ignition system, and getting the car back freshly painted is not a time to be pulling out the angle grinder.

Bosch HEI with small cap fits without any drama or cutting (I am assuming you are talking holden V8)

It's a 308 going in, it's a fairly mild street motor so I don't think it's necessary to go to overboard with ignition. I was tending towards Bosch HEI (with module removed) with a MSD 6AL. If I use the smaller cap, which rotor will fit?
Thanks for any help guys, I'm starting to find out about all the fidgety stuff and a bit of knowledge from blokes that have done it before is great!

Hey buddy If your fitting a MSD you will have to cut at least 10mm in and about 100mm wide, I had no other choice and then dressed it with some pinch weld.

That's interesting.
I've got the Commodore big cap electronic dizzy in my LX and haven't cut anything.
Are the MSD even bigger?
I didn't even think about a clearance issue. The motor was pulled from another LX (also firewall not cut) and I just put it straight in.
I thought the only issues were if you were running EFI.

I have a Mallory dual point in my blown LH that is a bit tight behind the blower, but I took the heater out and fitted a flat plate to the firewall, so clearance there is fine.

The MSD dizzys don't fit well because they are so tall. Accel make a billet dizzy that fits straight in, remove the module from it and run the magnetic pickup straight to the MSD unit

Is there clearance issues with the heater box also?

Correct the MSD dizzy is much taller like a giant, and if you do have a motor that rocks the fire wall lip needs to be cut ill try and post some pics.

ICE stuff highly recommended!!
I bought all ICE stuff, test run my engine without fault and then had the fella call me and say there 'might' be a problem can you send it back? they paid all postage and gave me a pile of other stuff for free for a problem that would probably have nver caused me a drama. cant imagine MSD etc doing that!

Ok, that's all helpful for a lot of us. I'd hate to have spent money on an MSD and then have to cut the car when a lot of others fit with no problem.
While I'm at it, when I want to replace the dizzy cap and rotor on my "big cap" electronic dizzy, is it correct that I just remove the adaptor, then fit a normal size Ford cap and rotor? That would mean I could use it on my blown motor instead of the Mallory dual point. I like this idea...

All I had to do is cut 10mm in by about 100 wide, make sure you paint the cut otherwise it will rust in the pinch weld.[attachment=19231:torana MSD 006.jpg]

Just ordered an ICE ignition its 195mm over all height as in compared to the MSD which is 240mm over all, no cutting with this puppy :)

Those Ice ignitions are a really nice bit of gear, bit pricey if you compare them to the MSD units you can pick up from the states, but you really get what you pay for and good customer service from Ice.

They are a shit load cheaper than cutting and repainting the lip :)
