Actually my best find of recent times was a bit of a happy accident.
One of the old blokes at the gym told me a while ago that there was a car in a nearby car park under a cover that he thought was a Torana. Now he has always been a bit of a goose so I didn't think much of it. Besides, I had driven past where he said it was plenty of times and seen nothing. He was pretty insistent though so I got a good description of exactly where to look and paid close attention after saturdays session.
Sure enough, exactly where he said it was there was a covered car. I could see from where I parked that it looked like a LC/LJ rear bumper visible beneath the slightly askew cover.
Expecting nothing of great note I went for a closer look...

At first the nice custom alloy tank caught my eye together with the nice looking wheels in need of a good polish. Big twin exhaust - presumably a V8! Most unexpected.
Lifting the corner of the tarp showed a deep blue colour two door in pretty good nick. By this stage I couldn't help myself so went to the front and lay on the ground for a look underneath.
Chassis kit check. Vented front discs check. Dusty and oily with evidence of use check. Looking closer I realise there is a front mount oil filter and an alloy sump. I squint closer and yes! It's an LS power plant. I have got as far as noticeing the cast iron manifolds and wondering what they came off when I heard a "hello" an looked up.
The owner happened to be passing by...

Turns out the conversion was done quite some time ago but it's been unused for a few years and only recently returned to the road. Early 5.7 LS with pre electronic 4 speed auto. Nine inch diff and fancy custom in tank fuel system. All engineered including VX commodore brakes. He was heading in my direction so I gave him a lift in the yellow LJ and we chatted toranas for a while.

A most unexpected car park find!

An unexpected event.

Coupe 4 reunion. First time I’ve ever seen another while out in mine.

Unfortunately the event was a sad one. We were at the funeral of Brad Dunstan, former chief engineer at HSV and responsible for notable cars such as the VS GTS-R and the 427 Monaro.

I had seen this about a couple of times. True general use vehicle - photo taken in the dark evening car park at the bowls club!
