Hi All,

Just wondering about which version of Ford twin thermo setups are have been used e.g.EB, AU, AU2 by some

members and how they were mounted and modified to be used on original Torana V8 or Kingswood V8 radiators?

Posting PICS of your setup would be appreciated.

Cheers, Archie.

I bought a set off ebay.  The fellow imports them in from China.  They are a very good fit for a HQ style radiator.  Took me about an hour to fit them up nicely.  They were $180 delivered and according to him, pull 4000CFM of air.  Has solved my over heating issues so pretty happy.

Don't know how to put pics up nowadays cause I still use Firefox and things don't work out anymore for me.

I have used the EL/EF setup on a LX. They are too wide and required cutting of the body number area to fit. Did a good job of cooling.
Used SAAB 9-5 fans on the LX hatch. Perfect size fit for a Torana radiator. Excellent performance even on very hot days.
Used the big shrouded dual SPAL setup on the HQ. Do an ok job but not sure they are any better than the cheaper OE alternatives to be honest.
I have a set of AU fans that I have never fitted to anything. Ugly asymmetric things that they are...
I will try to dig up some pictures.

I'm using 12" 250watt fans on a homemade shroud. These thing flow more than enough air.

I have a pair of generic 14" fans on an HQ radiator, they take up the full height of the core and sit over the sides by an inch or so. Required trimming the edge of the rails a little and modifying the side plates on the radiator so they sit flush on the core. Covers as much of the radiator as possible, obstructs as little passive air flow as possible (I've found this to be a big issue with a lot of shrouds), slimline and not shiny :-)

^^^ Your mention of "obstructs as little of the passive air flow as possible" is also very relevant.  I find my does run a little hotter on the highway and I have made the assumption it is because of this very reason.  The airflow is reduced and trapped to a degree within the shroud.

Good point that needs to be considered.

I believe mine are twin au's. A little butchery around the hose but fit well and never had any heat problems.

Archie..
Here's a couple of pics of mine. Twin AU and I only had to grind down the plastic shroud to make them fit.
Fans are attached to a 3 core HQ radiator with a couple of simple angle brackets up top and a strap at the bottom.
As suggested the top and bottom hose need the shroud to be trimmed to fit but not a hard job.
And I agree they do a great job.

Just to add to that, having them run at the right temp makes a big difference because having the fan spinning at its own speed can obstruct air flow when moving too. EFI systems which have allowance to turn fans off at a certain road speed are great

Ollie & Obey1, That's exactly the examples I'm looking for.

Ollie , Apart from cutting off the original mounting points and step on the top, I noticed you mounted yours the same orientation

as it was on the ford, which I suspect you only had to modify or cut out for the upper rad hose only.

Obey you mounted yours upside down, but assume you had to put cut outs for the both rad hoses?

Also did any of you have to trim anything off the chassis rail lips because the AU fans where fouling ?

Thanks

Archie yes mine was mounted upside down. I dry fitted it to the radiator out of the car and found this the best fit for me.

And yes I had to make mods for both top and bottom hoses. As for the chassis rail, no I didn't have to cut them.

All I did was use a flap disk and removed some plastic material from the fan shroud where it squeezes between the rails.

It was still a firm fit but hasn't caused any problems after over 5 years or so. I will try and dig out some pics if I can find them.

Here are some pics of pictures I have in my photo album(old school I know, actually having real photos !)
You can see where I mounted the separate relays and fuses for each fan on a bracket on the battery bracket as well.
That may be helpful for you as we'll.

Thanks Guys,

After testing both ways on my skinny Torana radiator i decide for the upside down position.

Mainly because of the rather rounded corners of the Torana radiator makes the sharper corners

of the cowl stick out like cats ears when mounted in the original orientation.

Not so much on 3 core kingswood radiator.

Also the wiring gets hidden underneath and the view from front looks better as all you see

the familiar and traditional look of the radiator tank unless you look straight from the top.

Yes I know, minor details.

I also cut and bent up parts of the radiators mounting frame/strap to make mounting lugs,

drilled hole and used captive nuts to the cowl to be fastened on. See pics.

Thanks again.

Archie

I've also been running upside down twin AU fans in my LX for well over a decade now, they have been flawless. Fitted to a stock old 3 core V8 radiator, they keep my 460HP 383 at 180 degrees even in Summer (ie. sitting on the thermostat temp). One of the best mods I've ever done. Super near fit when upside down (so much so that you don't even really notice them), and as mentioned earlier it positions the wiring neatly at the bottom too.
