Have you got the correct brace rod from the bellhousing bracket to the relay lever?

Hi Dave.

Probably not. Is that the round bar in the photo with the flat piece on the end. It used to have an Opel box.

If it is the brace rod, I can't find one on rare spares : (

Not the clutch fork pushrod. It is the Clutch Relay Lever Brace in the shop manual pick. I have heard of people using the HT/G brace which is incorrect for LC/LJ.

Also check the clutch rod anchor pin on the clutch pedal. It may be half worn through.

Ok thanks Dave, I'll check it out. It seems like if I make the push rod shorter it may fix the problem, but I shouldn't have to as it looks like an original part. I'll check the things you said first.

I can't find any information on the clutch relay lever brace. And none for sale anywhere.

Would you please be able to measure your one and maybe take a photo of it, then I can compare.

Thanks again,

The push rod is and has to be adjustable for length via the conical nut that contacts the throwout fork to enable correct clutch adjustment.

Hello Glenn,

In this link picture shows the positioning of the parts:-

Clutch2.jpg

http://www.gmh-toran...od/#entry265785

Edit:-

Just thinking mechanically out aloud here:-

1 - correct length clutch shear rod is 12 inches (from pedal to rat trap)

2 - worn pivot points of rat trap (a lot of force wears/flogs these linkages out)

3 - clutch pedal position in the cab.

I have measured the relay lever brace. It measures 325mm between hole centres. If somebody could please measure their relay lever brace that would be great. And some photos.

The push rod measures approx 430mm which is I think right.

So Im just confused now.

Hi Glenn

I get 307 mm centre to centre between the pivot point holes and 330mm end to end.

Agree, 307mm hole centres on the relay lever brace but I get 325mm overall length.

Glenn, all your clutch linkage parts look correct for LC/LJ 6cyl.

What I would like to know now is the overall length of the pull rod that goes from the relay lever to the clutch pedal.

You will most likely need to remove the rod from the car to measure it.

Just re measured relay lever brace, properly.. and I get 308mm hole centres and 330mm overall, so thats alright. I will check pull rod length, although it looks like its never been touched.

Im thinking its the brace bracket. If you look at my photos it doesn't look like the one in the Torana manual. Also there are two holes in it for the relay lever brace to bolt onto. To fix the problem I just need to move the relay lever brace about 10mm back towards the back of the car, because its only just touching the front end. The second hole is 10mm back from the first one... I wonder, could you guys please check yours.

There may be a second hole in the brace bracket that bolts to the bellhousing but there is only one pin fitted to to the bracket to attach the brace to.

In light of the evidence so far I still feel the anchor pin on the clutch pedal may be badly worn.

Also what is your clutch adjustment like? Does the clutch begin to engage when the pedal is about an inch off the floor?

You are right Dave, there is only one pin fitted to the bracket, although it does not bolt to the bell housing, its just a spare hole?

If you look closely at my photo you can see it just behind the pin that the relay lever goes onto.

I think you might also be right about the anchor pin. Can you identify it on the manual page above, I couldn't find anchor pin anywhere.

I have put a bolt through the second unused hole and this has fixed the problem. I don't think its right though but it will do for now until I find this anchor pin.

Fig. 7A-13. View A at top R.H of page. It says 'Clutch Rod Anchor (install this way)

That anchor fits onto a pin on the clutch pedal and the clip stops it from coming off the pin.

Over many years of use the anchor cuts into the pin. which will affect the adjustment of the other linkages.

Also note that the clutch control rod used in the LC/LJ is similar to the control rod used in the HT/HG but I do not know if both rods are the same length or not.

Hi

My rat trap is not on the vehicle at the moment (vehicle away being painted) but I can put up a pic if needed.

Cheers

That's great thanks Bazza. Exactly the same as mine. I've moved the relay lever bracket back one hole, by putting an M8 bolt through the spare hole. Its fixed the problem but only temporary cause its not right.  Could you please measure the push rod.
