Obviously this isn't directly related but a bit of a coincidence....

Could be a police/road service (RMS here in NSW) reference if it had front end damage and nose cone along with supports was repaced

Thanks all. What a bummer this critical number is missing as all the tags along the firewall denote a genuine SLR 5000. Also my dad got old transport papers service receipts and other paperwork with the car show matching tag and body numbers showing once again it was the real deal.

If all the tags are there, I don't think this makes it any less of an SL/R, especially if you have all the old paperwork.

People have accidents, cars get repaired, shit happens!

A "police number" is a chassis number issued by the police when the original can't be used for some reason, or in official speak: "Motor vehicles with missing, suspect, altered or damaged identification particulars"

For older vehicles they typically start with the first letter of the issuing state (N = NSW, V = Victoria, etc.), then the first two numbers are the year it was issued, and they end with a "P" (for Police presumably)

There is a thread around here somewhere...

Unfortunately with the loss of the number a potential buyer will always be concerned that the car has been rebodied or worse, rebirthed.
Only a problem if you ever wish to sell.

Come to think of it, police numbers aren't just chassis numbers, you sometimes see them on engine blocks too.

That might be true Rexy but he has the paper previously dated before the accident damage and as long as those numbers match up with the new rego numbers minus the chassis number and with the new Police number I can't see any problem with

Thanks guys. Link to earlier thread helped too. I guess like most thinks WA do it a little differently.

I do agree with Rexy, as soon as things aren't straight forward it does scare people away. Already before you purchase the car the paperwork tells you its been in a accident and missing body number just makes me nervous and wouldn't pay as much as the same car with no questions. Just my opinion

People like to buy a car knowing there won't be problems further down the track. You are correct but if less people are interested in the car, the car is not going to fetch its potential worth.

i.e. Two identical restored 5000's; one has been in a severe accident and repaired, the other is straight.

Which one would you pay a bit more for?

Sad really that the relevant I'D's were never recorded. Cut and shut repairs were legal back in the day along with skirt replacements etc. It was the "shonks" that stuffed it up for everyone.
