I have seen in the LH parts book that there are 2 different size alternator pulleys - 2” and 3” for V8 Torana’s. Is the 3” identical to LJ XU1?
Is it the same number in the parts book ? That would answer your question straight away.

According to the LJ parts book there are 2 different ones for the XU-1. One for use without internal regulator and the other (P/N 2825063) for use with internal regulator. P/N 2825063 is the one required for the 5 litre V8. I have no idea what the difference is between the 2 XU-1 types.

So when was the internal regulator introduced on the LJ?

2806231 pulley has the Woodruff Key slot.
2825063 pulley does not.
The '410 ' pulley fan that all XU1 models and many other Holden models use has a Woodruff Key slot .
Not all 7430410 fans are stamped '410 '.

The UM wiring loom was used with the bosch external reg alternator 679 and pulley 2806231 form 1/72 to around the 5/72........and LC xu1's CK
The AG wiring loom was used with the lucas internal reg alternator and pulley 2825063 from around 5/72 to xu1's completed in the 12th month 72 but plated 11/72.
The JG wiring loom for 1973 (amber front turn signal) was used with lucas internal reg alternator and pulley 2825063 this is also the loom used on late xu1's fitted with extractors with extra wiring harness.
All information parts catalogue M37608 supersedes M37127.

So according to the parts book for the LH Torana
8 cylinder engine 2 1/4"? 2825019
5 litre engine 3 1/8"? 2825063
So it would appear that the 5 litre is the same as LJ XU1. Most cars which I see have the smaller pulley on them.

So just to clarify what you are saying, are you saying early xu1 up to late 72 use a woodruff key ? May i ask where you got this gmh information please ?

Interesting. What does the larger pulley do for things?
Slows down the rotating speed on the alternator.
Cheers

Interesting. What does the larger pulley do for things?
Basically for the reason not to burn the alternator out, from the high rev range !

There is no documentation that I possess.
All these pictures have been on the forum before photobucket shot itself in the foot.
These are all 2825063.
I am working on someone who has a 2806231 on a bosch alternator that has never been serviced. If they come to the party then I'll put up a picture of this pulley.

Because i don't believe that i will ever be able to see a picture on this forum ever again, could you please tell me if your saying That the xu1 up until late 72 uses a woodruff key or not please mate ?

Ok then.
Yes that is - Bosch XU1 have the slotted pulley for the Woodruff key.
Lucas XU1 pulley is not machined for the Woodruff key .

Because XU1’s revved higher than other Torana’s, they put a larger pulley on to slow the alternator down. Not sure why the 5 litre V8 has a larger pulley.
The 5 Litre doesn't use a larger pulley unless its the L34 option. The parts manual is inconsistent in its usage of the terms 5 litre and L34.

Thanks Arrimar. That's the answer I was looking for. So an SLR 5000 didn't have one? It's to go in an L34. That explains why they are rare. So it seems they put the bigger pulley only on the high revving cars.

Season's greating all.
I know this is an old post but I'm little confused as to the correct part number for a lucas alternator. The last photo in post #15 shows the gmh part number as 2825482 but the parts catalogue lists the "generator assy" as 2825481. Either the parts catalogue is wrong or 2825482 is not refering to the assembly - prehaps it's just the alt without the pulley.
Anyone have a view on this?

It appears that 2825482 will be the alternator assy less pulley and fan. This Lucas alternator assy (less pulley & fan) is identical for all LJ 6cyl, it is the different size pulleys that make it an XU1 alternator (2825481) or an S, SL , GTR alternator (2825480).

Great thanks s pack.Interestingly gmh changed 2825480 from Lucas p/n 629 212 30A to 629 212 45A at some point. Could be for a different model or just an improvement over the original crappy alternators but curiously they keep the same part number. I wonder did 2825481 also change from 30A to 45A at some point?Begs the question why were the original Lucas 15ACR supposedly so bad? Internal regulator?CheersR
2825480 was also used on 6cyl and 4.2 V8 (exc Air Con) in LH Torana. Perhaps up graded to 45A at LH release? I don't have a later HQ Parts Cat that include the int reg Lucas.
