Anyone got a pic of those self locating 72 Sprintmaster wheels?
I just bought one..stamped Jun 1972 and pretty sure it is one...real small stud holes.

the locating lug in the "rear" of the rim IS a part of the cast NOT a press in spacer.

this is clearly shown in the pic above

If they are pressed in what stops the wheel coming off, surely not just the interference fit between self locating bush and the stud hole?

Hi johnno.

This has been discussed several times before, you might find it with a search. There was no 'change over' as such, because the Sprintmasters weren't actually factory fitted. There is no option code number for the Sprintmaster alloys. To my knowledge all XU-1s left the factory with steel wheels. All GM-H had to do make sure that a minimum of 200 XU-1s left the dealers with Sprintmasters fitted to allow CAMS homologation. The wheels were fitted in transit at holding yards & sometimes at the dealers premesis. To answer your question, this was all done around August/September '72 in time for Bathurst.

The self locating lip only locates the wheel on the axle studs, the wheel is held on by the rebate further out where the wheel nut washer sits. If you have the incorrect
length shank on the wheel nuts they hit the self locating lip instead of the outer rebate, if you know what I mean.

so can you tell what rim you are looking at without removing it?

does anyone have any photos showing the differences, and what to look at?

sorry for jumping in.

I believed self locators were only 6/72 cast dates as were for the bathurst race cars for faster pit stops. does anyone have a self locating 73 cast rim? to confirm what been said above ^. and the 73 race cars ran 13X9 etc or there abouts

Wrong area but what are these worth now?
been given 2 in last 3 months, saw them on two different scrap piles, asked each guy if they wanted them as I needed spare for set on car (haven't checked them for date) and how much? both said take them.
have same markings and locating section as pic above but can only make out 72 in circle not month.
I know one wants some old ford gear I have, he has 5 Toranas sitting in paddock so I offered to swap parts, no money, he liked the idea.

The 72 I just sold on Ebay for $284 is a self locator I have since worked out..better to go to someone who needs it than sitting in my shed.

Just out of interest, I have a couple of 14 x 6" Sprintmasters with the 'self locating' holes in them. I'll have to have a look for any date castings/markings on them.
