Guys,

my LSD (banjo) locked up. A few of the guys on here and mechanics I spoke to said it could have had the wrong oil used when I had pinion seal replaced recently. They recommend replacing the oil and driving it to see what happens. So before I put anything in that is supposed to do the job I'd like to know if someone here has replaced their LSD oil and what did they use. This way I'll know for sure its not the dam oil causing me grief. At the moment it has Castrol LSX 85-140 in it.

Cheers

I've used Penrite SAE 85W-140 for my 3.36 Banjo with no sudden explosions or lock ups (as of yet).

the wrong diff oil in limited slip diffs can give you a shuddering noise on corners, but if its clunking, i think you might have another problem!

i dropped the centre out and there is no visable damage and there is no metal in the oil. It also seems to be ok when cold but once warmed right up is when the problem starts. The noise on letting the clutch out is like a stuffed uni but once driving there is no noise. However when you slow down and turn a corner thats when the noise starts. So its got to be something with the lsd locking up.

I don't have LSD but I use EPX 80W-90. What sorta noise is it? If its a knocking noise when turning corners, your bearings on the axles might be going. If their is a grinding noise the bearings might be completely gone.

if it was bearing noise it would be constant and not change even with road surface changes. I'd best describe the noise as clanging and banging.

According to the Castrol website the recommended diff oil for an V8 LH/LX is LSX 90 or SAF-XA. The website even mentions that it will prevent clutch chatter which could be the noise you are referring to.

if its only doing it when its hot, its either the wrong oil, or what they call "pick-up" on the back of the limited slip gear.

thought I'd let you know, I changed the oil and took it round the block 3 times and so far no noise. I'll give it more of a workout over the weekend, am hoping like hell it was only wrong diff oil causing me problem.
