gday

is ther any grinding/modifying needed?

The conversion to HQ brakes on LC is basically the same for LH/X.

You will need:
HQ stub axles with shorter (Harrop/A9X) steering arms
HQ rotors
HQ calipers, pads, brake lines

Yes a small amount of grinding is required on the top control arm. This is because the caliper hits it at full lock under load.

Keep searching the forums, you will find more info on this conversion. I had thousands of photos which I can no longer find. I send some to Dattoman about 18 months ago for him to include on his 'how to' website... but I don't think he got around to doing that.

so you dont/cant use lc drum stubs.....

was it a difficult conversion? is it highly recomended?

Including the Harrop arms, allow about $650.

Forgot to mention that's for HQ front brakes onto an LX. Different steering arms may be required for HQ brakes onto an LC/LJ.

LC drum stubs leaves you nowhere to bolt the caliper to
Unless you contact Castlemain Rod Shop and see if they have bolt on brackets to suit those stubs

CRS do, but they charge about $130 these days for you to send them the stub axles to be machined. Then there's the $170 or so for the adapter kit. Then you need the discs, calipers etc. it adds up to too much.

ah so theres alittle more work needed than i thought.

so it seams im looking at $300 for the adapters/maching. then just the brakes (disks, calipers, pads ect)

it seams more reasonally priced compared to the hopper stoppers conversion ($1200) - are they just HQ brakes aswell?

what are the volvo brakes like - just as much work required?

thanks

The hoppers kit is not 'JUST' hq brakes as well. It's a "little" different. The discs are bigger and the calipers are off a commodore, I think VT or something. If you go the big brake kit 330mm then the calipers are off a Ford AU XR8. Plus you can have different stud pattern apart from HQ.

The HQ upgrade is good for the budget conscious and if your not really going to track your car etc.

As is the volvo conversion. Both would be better than the stock LC/LJ brakes.

There's plenty of threads on this. Try narrowing your search down by just typing in "Volvo" or "HQ brakes" Or use the advance search function.

holdon, you are intending on using second hand parts. Hoppers Stoppers kits are all new parts. They also use a 298 MM disc and AU II calipers. Time for a fair comparison.

Your intended conversion:

CRS kit $300
New discs $160
New calipers $200
New bearings $40
New brake hoses $100
Drum brake stubs $150
Plus a few piddly bits

We are then looking at $1050 compared to $1200. I would spend the extra.

+New Pads

The hoppers kit seems cheap in comparison unless you have all the parts just lying around I would spend the extra. I guess it also comes down to wheel choice, you might need new wheels after installing the hoppers kit as most people go for commodore stud pattern.

In the original post, a change of stud pattern was indicated, so the wheel change shouldn't be included in the price.
