I am wanting to buy a powerglide to suit V8, with 308 turbo pattern. I have heard that 6 cylinder powerglides can be rebuilt just as strong as a V8 one, but the 6 cylinder ones have different ratios. I think I can get a 6 cylinder powerglide cheaper than a factory V8 one. I would obviously get it rebuilt, and it would need to handle 800+hp.
Questions:
1. What are the differences between 6 cylinder and V8 powerglides?
2. Is the input shaft the same for a 6 cyl and V8 powerglide?
3. Are replacement V8 belhousings available, and how much would one cost me?
4. Can I simply bolt a V8 belhousing to a 6 cylinder gearbox?
5. What is a good price for a powerglide (to suit rebuild) these days?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

These days, a Powerglide can be built without a single part from GM. There are several different 1st gear raios available.

Yeah, you're probably right. It would be hard to find a secondhand bellhousing. And a new one would be $300+just buy a V8 case as will cost same as 6 powerglide and a V8 bellhousing if not cheaper
Thanks. I'll keep looking for a V8 one.

The only difference interally between v8 and 6 is the ratio of 1st gear and the oil pump. sometimes u can pick up cheap 6cyl ones from the swap meets i bought 4 6cyl powerglides at the Bundy swap meet last month for $80 for the lot. You can by new v8 pumps for them and bell housings to suit what u want.

Input shaft is also different from 6-8 cyl (look the same however V8 is longer)
