Gday. Just a few quick questions regarding the Borg Warner 5 speed manual found in early Commodores.

Is it a good 'box? Just for general street driving, with a bit of casual fun every now and then.

And, more importantly -

What mods are necessary to get one into an LJ? Can I use the M20 X-member and Tailshaft? Bellhousing? Or is it easier just to get a VH wreck with Blue and 5 Speed and swap the lot over...

I wouldn't mind putting one in my LJ, give me some overdrive for the highways.

Cheers, RIM

As far as how good they are, my mate had 1 for about 3 years in his commodore......rebuilt 4 times

Well OK...

How do they compare to an M20?

Then stick in the BW, shorten the tailshaft and take it easy. Which you should do anyway, unless it's on a race track. In which case the BW would be unsuitable.

I had one in the EH eon's ago....I loved having a 5 speed but they are weak...weaker than m20.

The commo tailshaft is 2 piece...so you may want to have a torry one shortened by 2 inches..I did my own...but you know that wouldn't be ideal.

celica is the best 5 speed option you have.....but 3.08:1 diff gears with 4 speed is good too.

OK then. Sounds like I'll stick with the 4 speed!

Yeah mate, i used to have one of these in my UC behind a stock 202 at the time. It was rebuilt and while it was good to have a 5speed, it blew up on me. I was travelling 120km/h and it locked up. 70km from home, 70km from work... What to do!!

Good boxes for around town though.

Cheers
Keith
