Gday all. hoping for a bit of help from you blokes. i have decided to "take/buy" my dads torana which has been in the family for quite a while. a couple of questions i have, firstly is there a site which decodes the ID plates? i know there is a couple around that help you out for GT Falcons and the such (allready been down that path with an XY) secondly, as im pretty sure its a genuine SL/R 5000 how hard is it to find genuine SL/R parts for these? im pretty keen to get it back to its original glory. finally what sort of value would a decent SL/R 5000 torana have, i only want ball park figures here, just to know how much i have to play with in restoring the vehicle.

The decoder only gives you a basic idea however, so if you'd like to know for sure then pos up all the numbers or PM me if you don't want to post them. Some pics would help too.

Standard 5.5 in wide steel rims with covers. Is it LH or LX? LX had the option of kidney dish 13x6" rims. Hotwires were never an option. We can help with paint codes etc if you show us the numbers

I'll check my paint codes when I get home. Your body number and VIN match, thats good so far, and the date code of 5/74 matches the date code D in the VIN. What you need to see is does the ALH003662M appaer on the RHS chassis rail? And what is your engine number? Looks good so far, oh and it has black trim with the grey golfball inserts.

Your paint colour is "Chrome Yellow".

Your engine number is on the passenger side of the block just below the head at the front of the block and should start with "HT....". Check the casting date mark which is above the oil pump to see if its close to the cars build date.

Casting date mark will be like - 12E4. 12 is day of month, E is month (A = Jan, B = Feb etc I is skipped) and 4 is last digit of year ie 1974.

The six numbers in the body number should match the six numbers in the VIN.

The hardest part to find for a LH 5000 is the ashtray. The more original the car is in terms of a restoration then the more it is generally worth. I would expect a restored LH 5000 to be worth 25-30K but the prices are on the rise.

okie doke. 3/4 sussed now. last question i reckon is does the sl/r 5000 have any different holes or panels or brackets on the body? so i can check to see if it has been body swapped at any stage

Hmmm I'd have to double check but fairly sure 6" was the optional alloy rims and the A9X rims only on LX. As for the body being swapped does the Chassis number at the front of the car on the drivers side rail match the number on the compliance plate? Should be ALH......

This is why it's important to know all the numbers. I have seen a so called SLR 5000 at Torana the great in 2004. I was drawn to the car for a few reasons, but the main one being the chrome around the doors. LX SLR5000's didn't have that, SLR's did. First inspection showed the numbers matched however the date on the compliance plate was 01/78, and the date code on the centre tag was F, meaning it was built sometime between 01 sep 75 and 31 Aug 76. Very dodgy. So you need to make sure the chassis number is the original stamping, matches the compliance plate, and then the date code matches your build date.
your car is:
8d69tdj426977h The second D means the car was built sometime between 01 sep 73 and 31 Aug 74, so looks ok so far.
build date is 5/74
