Chevrolet had an X rod as well. It was a small X stamped on the cap and they were more of a heavy duty rod for K20's and other mid size trucks.

Another pic of the large X Holden rod. The cap is different to the narrow X ones.

I also found a picture of the early Holden rod with the letters cast into the beam.

Small valve heads and single row timing chain up until VK?

That was 308/5.0. There were V5H engines prior to the destroke below 5000cc that were the same L34 type engine as the VB prefix LV2/V5H engine but were still just VT prefix. VA 304 were the standard small valve 5.0L. As far as I understand it, GMH had to put 5000 VB prefix LV2/V5H engines into manual cars to homologate the sub 5000cc engine. Then do the 500 GroupA.
The car raced in 1985 would have been full 304 V5H but these had standard rocker gear and single row timing chains. Once GMH had made 5000 304 V5H they changed to V7X which was the same as the V5H but without the B cast heads.

I think those SBC X rods were the predecessor to the later pink rod.

That bottom one is the same as the one I have.

AF = Australian Forge, which is commonly found on forged components.

Here is the specs for the F5000 engine. Forged rods stated (claimed Repco made). The L34 part of the LH Engineering Tech Specs just says: "Strengthened cross-section with increased diameter bearing cap bolts". The original 253 specs published with the HK Engineering Tech Specs state standard 253 and 308 rods are "Heat Treated Steel Forging", and they remained that way for all of the docs I have up to HZ although they start just saying "Steel Forging" with HQ. HK-HG state the same as each other.

Note this document is where the real 253 and 308 stroke is published - 3 1/16" ie 3.0625". Most manuals round it to 3.062" or 3.063" which is why the metric size is always questionable. Actual size of the engine are:

253 = 4144cc.

308 = 5045cc.
