Thanks for the reply Toranamuk. It will be interesting to see how they all line up.
I am going to convert my car to 5 speed but definately don't want to be modifying the trans tunnel to do it. I've been told to avoid the supra 5 speed and look at getting a Tremac TKO. I'm really not sure which way to go but living up here I need an over drive. I've been told approx $5000 for a full TKO conversion everything included all brand new. Have you had much to do with the TKO? Am I better off just going with a Supra box? I don't think I will ever have much more than about 3-400hp but I do intend to race at the drags occasionally.

With the mods to the subframe that is needed to fit a T5, a T56 will require a lot more tunnel & subframe reworking.


According to Mal Wood and other sources a T56 fits an LH Torana with no tunnel mods. The T5 is a smaller box than the T56 but the bellhousing is longer and the shifter housing is higher. I'm doing a TKO conversion at the moment and it's the same deal, the box is bigger but it still fits better than a T5.

So I'm back where I was before. Who has done a T56 into a Torana and how much tunnel mods were required? I like the sound of a six speed better than a five.

OK Gents, over the weekend I pulled my finger out and trial fitted my T56 to an LX.
The T56 I have is a standard VY/X unit with the 'remote' shifter adapter removed and blocked off witha flat plate. I have retained the OE bell which will need slight mods (more on that later)
The pic below shows the trans fitted and viewed from inside the car through the shift hole in the floor. the hole in this vehicle has been modded slightly as I was told it had a Celica box fitted.

The following two pics also show (not very well) the immediate tunnel clearance at the bellhousing. The most obvious bell mods can be seen here also

Looks like your having fun hatchssv8! From the pictures it looks like you have not had to widen or cut the trans tunnel yet. Did you look at aftermarket bell housings and find that they were not suitable? If the shifter ends up at the cover plate you can see in the top picture that does not look like too major a modification. How/where did you source your T56 gearbox? Can you give me an approx price you paid for the box?
